2025 Asia Minor Summer Travel Program to Pontos-Black Sea region
Part I: Athens- Centre for Asia Minor Studies
Professor Tom Papademetriou, once again, had the pleasure to lead the Hellenic College and Dean C. and Zoë S. Pappas Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies of Stockton University sponsored program 2025 Asia Minor Summer Travel Seminar. This program was funded by the New York Life Insurance Company Center for the Study of Hellenism in Asia Minor and the Pontos at Hellenic College. The NY Life Insurance Company sold policies to Greeks and Armenians in the late Ottoman Empire that were never paid out after the Great Catastrophe of 1922 and the Burning of Smyrna took place. After a couple of years of good faith search for their descendants for possible payouts, with the guidance of Bishop Andonios of Phasiane, the NY Life Insurance Company donated $1million to Hellenic College to establish an academic center focused on the study of Asia Minor. Directed by the Dean of Hellenic College, Dr. Nicholas Ganson, this summer travel program is the premier program of the Center that takes place every two year. The program consists of two weeks study in the Centre for Asia Minor Studies (CAMS) in Athens, and then a travel portion to Turkey. This year we focused on the Pontos region of Black Sea, on the city of Trabzon and its hinterlands. The students are Ph.D., Masters and undergraduate students from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Stockton University, University of Toronto, University of California-Berkeley, Fordham University, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and Simon Fraser University. The seminar spent two weeks attending lectures, taking field trips, and most importantly, focusing on the oral history archive of refugees accounts from the region of Pontos collected between 1930-1970 by the CAMS. Many thanks to Maria Mougaraki and the staff of the CAMS.
Academic highlights of the two weeks in Athens:
•Tour of the Archives by Dr. Dimitri Kamouzis, Researcher at CAMS
•Lecture: Introduction: Hellenism in the Pontos by Prof. Paschalis Kitromilides, Director of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies.
•Introduction to the Archives of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies by Ms. Barbara Psychoula-Kontogianni, Head of the Library.
•Lecture by Dr. Dimitri Kamouzis - The Greco-Turkish Exchange of Populations and the settlement of the Asia Minor Greek refugees in Greece after 1923.
•Lecture by Dr. Nicos Nicolaides - Greek Education in the late Ottoman Empire
•Lecture on the Failed 1919-1922 Greek Military Campaign into Asia Minor by Dr. Dimitri Kamouzis to a joint audience with Columbia University program led by Dr. Giorgos Antoniou.
•Two lectures on Musical Folklore Archives and Pontic music by Haris Sarris, Head of the Musical Folklore Archives.
•Visit to Museum of Asia Minor Hellenism -Nea Philadelphia- a local museum that collected artifacts reflecting life before and after departure as refugees.
•Day trip to Island of Aegina to visit the tomb and church of St. Nektarios at the Holy Trinity women’s monastery, the abandoned churches of the Palaiohora, the stunning Temple of Aphaia and to have pistachio ice cream at the port!
•Visit to National Historical Museum that outlines the narrative of the modern Greek State and that had a special exhibition on Refugees
•Visit to the American School of Classical Studies with a private tour by Director of the Library, Dr. Maria Georgeopoulou, and Assistant Director, Dr. Irini Solomonidi. We were shown rare, printed materials related to Asia Minor, including the oldest printed copy of Homer’s Iliad.
•Tour of the Asia Minor collection at the Benaki Museum led by former curator of the Post-Byzantine material, Dr. Anna Ballian, and current curator, Ms. Mara Verykokou. The experience was lovely and warm, as we immersed ourselves in the beautiful collection of religious and lay artifacts created in the places like Gümüşhane (Argyroupolis) we soon would visit.
