The community gathered at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University for a two-day Juneteenth event hosted by Ralph Hunter, founder and director of the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey.

Although freedom was granted through the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, enslaved African Americans in Texas were not freed until nearly two and a half years later on June 19, 1865.

Visitors viewed a powerful new series of educational banners charting the history of Juneteenth and slavery, designed by artist Carla Cornick and edited by Pernell Ponce. The exhibit was curated by students My’air Henry, Adrianna Schofield and Guiven St. Jean.

Yitzhak Sharon is a Distinguished Professor of Physics, but he’s also a friend, mentor, teacher-scholar, father and husband. His photographic memory is arguably unmatched. He’s taught “Atom, Man and Universe” to roughly 10,000 students, and he can still recite where former students sat in his 250-student lectures as well as who sat in the seats surrounding them. Those he’s taught have stories and fond memories of his classes. Alumni and friends drove from as far as Massachusetts to celebrate his retirement after 54 years of teaching at Stockton University this month. Just as he did at the end of his classes, he sang Auld Lang Syne to bid farewell to his Stockton family. Share your memories in the comments below.

Honoring history. Celebrating community. Sharing joy. ❤️
Stockton University came together at our Atlantic City Campus to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that recognizes freedom, resilience and the continued pursuit of equality.
The celebration featured a special tribute to Vera King Farris, honoring Beverly Vaughn and Dianne Stalling for their commitment and service to Stockton.
This year’s event centered on Black joy as a form of resistance, celebrating culture, community and the strength found in coming together.
