🎶 A little peek into what I’ve been planning for our Homeschool Chorus & Musicianship Program…
I’ve been spending a lot of time lately planning the curriculum for our new 8-week homeschool music program, and I am genuinely so excited about what we’re going to be doing together this fall.
One of the things I feel most passionate about as a music teacher is the power of making music together.
Private lessons are wonderful—and so important for developing technique and advancing individual skills—but there is another whole side of being a musician that can only really develop when we make music with other people.
We learn to listen and watch. To respond to one another. To adjust. To build on someone else’s musical idea. To contribute our own ideas. And, perhaps most importantly, we experience the joy that comes from creating something together that none of us could create quite the same way alone.
That’s a big part of what I want this program to be.
So, I thought I’d give you a little peek at what our Tuesday afternoons will look like!
🎶 We’ll sing together.
We’re building a collection of songs that will introduce different aspects of ensemble singing, including unison singing, rounds, and beginning part-singing. We’ll work toward sharing some of these at the end of our eight weeks.
🎼 We’ll build real musicianship and theory skills.
We’ll work on note reading and rhythm reading while exploring concepts like the musical alphabet, an introduction to the staff, scales and scale function—and then find ways to experience and apply those concepts through our voices, instruments, movement, and bodies. The goal is not just to learn what these things look like on a page, but to begin connecting what we see, hear, sing, play, and feel as musicians.
🏃 We’ll move—a lot!
Much of our theory and musicianship work will have a strong movement-based approach. Children learn in so many different ways, and I love helping them experience musical concepts physically rather than only seeing them on a page.
👂 We’ll practice being an ensemble.
Through group exercises and musical games, we’ll develop the skills of listening, watching, responding, and working together that are so important to becoming a musician.
✨ And every week will end with some improvisation and group exploration.
I’m deliberately not going to tell you too much about that last part because I want there to be some surprises for the kids. 😊
We already have a wonderful core group forming, and I would really love to add a few more children. The more musicians we bring together, the more possibilities we have for singing in parts, musical games, improvisation, and that community aspect that is so central to what I hope this program will become.
