This fall, Keen School of Music is offering Fundamentals of Jazz: History, Culture & Performance, a 4-week educational series taught by Ryder Smith for anyone who wants to take a deeper look at the music, history, and culture behind one of Americaโ€™s most influential genres.

Throughout the course, students will explore the major eras and subgenres of Jazz, including big band, bebop, cool jazz, and fusion, while learning about the artists who helped define them, such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, and more.

Weโ€™ll look at how each era influenced the next, what gives each style its distinct sound, and how Jazz developed its own musical language over time.

For musicians, the class will also introduce Jazz theory, standards, improvisation, soloing, arrangement, and group performance concepts. For non-musicians, no performance background is required. This class is also a great fit for anyone who simply loves Jazz and wants to better understand what they are hearing.

- Thursdays, October 29th through November 19th
- 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
- 4 weeks | 8 total hours
- Regular Tuition: $150
- Early Bird Tuition: $125 when you register by October 10th

Vol State students and military members also receive 5% off tuition (Please reach out to the school to recieve the discount, not available for online booking)

๐Ÿชˆ DID YOU KNOW? The flute is a woodwind instrument, even though most modern concert flutes are made of metal!

The name โ€œwoodwindโ€ can be a little misleading. Instruments in the woodwind family are grouped together because of their history and the way air is used to create sound, not simply because of what they are made from. Earlier flutes were commonly made from wood, while the silver-colored concert flutes most students recognize today are typically made from metal.

The flute is also a little different from many of its woodwind cousins. There is no reed to vibrate. Instead, the player directs air across the opening of the mouthpiece, similar to blowing across the top of a bottle. Learning to control that tiny stream of air is a huge part of developing a clear, beautiful flute tone.

At Keen School of Music, Molly LeFevre teaches private flute lessons on Fridays from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Molly is a certified Kโ€“12 music educator with experience teaching elementary music, middle school band, jazz band sectionals, marching band, and private lessons.

๐ŸŽธ DID YOU KNOW? You donโ€™t need to know dozens of guitar chords before you can start playing real songs.

In fact, most songs that you enjoy are built around progressions using just three or four chords.

That is one of the fun things about learning guitar, once a student learns a few basic chord shapes and starts getting comfortable moving between them, you can play most of your favorite songs pretty quickly!

Knowing the chord shape is only part of it, guitar players also learn how to change chords smoothly, keep a steady rhythm, use different strumming patterns, understand how chords work together, and eventually recognize patterns that show up again and again in the music they listen to.

Your first goal does not have to be memorizing every chord in a giant chord book. Most of the time, four chords, a good rhythm, and a song you actually love are a much better place to start.

Private guitar lessons at Keen School of Music are taught by Aaron Keen and Adam Shea.

Aaron has been teaching music for more than 20 years and works across a wide range of genres and instruments. Adam studied Guitar Performance at McNally Smith College of Music and has more than a decade of teaching experience, along with professional experience as a working guitarist and Music Director.

We have guitar lesson availability during the week and on Saturdays, and our flexible scheduling makes it easier to find a time that works around school, work, sports, and everything else life puts on the calendar.
