A few years ago we started offering one-time volunteer experiences for groups of volunteers that wanted to see what the Youth Mentoring Program was all about. We called the events "Big for a Day" and volunteers are randomly matched with kids in our community. They spend a couple of hours together playing games, making crafts, and getting to know each other. Each event is supervised by BBBS staff. This has become one of our absolute favorite events to hold and last night we had the privilege of hosting Big for a Day with volunteers from Sandburg TRIO Upward Bound and Littles from Knox County YMCA. King Elementary School hosted the event and pizza was provided by Pizza House.

Thanks to everyone that helped make this happen. We had a blast and hope this event inspired people to become a Big!

*If any volunteer groups in Knox County are interested in hosting a Big for a Day event, please don't hesitate to reach out!

We've got a few more radiologic technology features as National #RadTechWeek comes to a conclusion. Up next is Madison Norville, a 2nd-year rad tech student.

"My name is Madison Norville. I am a second-year radiology technology student at Carl Sandburg College. I started my college education at Sandburg on a music talent scholarship where I finished my general education in the first two years. When I started the journey of college, I already had the idea that I wanted to take x-rays. All of this was based from a basketball injury I had in my junior year of high school. I had eventually found out I fractured my patella (knee cap). Seeing those images really had me hooked on the radiology career path. Thankfully I had a great team working with me through high school called Sandburg TRIO Upward Bound. They worked through Sandburg with high school students. They helped me set up a time to really see what the program was like. I really felt it was a good choice for me.

"Before I knew, it was time to apply for the program. I had every qualification you needed to get into the program. I then took a TEAS test, and passed. It was a great feeling to start moving on to what is essentially going to be the rest of my life. I started the program the summer of 2019. We worked really hard that summer semester to have us ready for clinicals that following fall semester. We have been working hard ever since.

"We have been through so much within the last couple years and even months. It was not always easy, and you have to stay on top of your work. Especially when COVID hit, we were completely online. That was hard all in itself because our program is so hands-on, and that is how I was learning best. I luckily had a pair of really great teachers who worked with not only me, but everyone in the class. Now that we are back, we have been working many hours in the clinical field to make sure we graduate on time. We then will be taking our national boards exams to officially become RT(R)s.

This program has been really special to me. I’ve met some of my best friends, learned from some of the best techs, and found something I enjoy doing. I was very thankful to have found a career path that fit me. I can’t wait to move forward with my career in radiology, and to see all the opportunities it has for me. I also can’t give a big enough thank you to everyone that has believed in me the past 2 years, and pushed me to be my very best. So here I am hoping to be Madison Norville RT(R) in 2021." ☢️

Congratulation on all your sucess Brock Abbott

Message from a Parent.

Hi there and to whom it may concern:

Here are my son's (Brock Joseph Abbott) pictures of his graduation at CSC and his cap!! He was so happy to be able to enter the contest!! We are so proud of him as he graduated high school with honors from Abingdon-Avon High School this past Sunday, May 15th. And today graduated with his AA from CSC after completing the AMAZING Dual Credit program partnership with the amazing staff and educators at ATown and CSC. A priceless experience for my son and as a family, we are happy, exhilarated, and soul-filled with pride and so excited for Brock’s future.

He also was able to participate in the Upward Bound Program during the past 4 years of high school and I cannot even begin to be more appreciative of his experience with Upward Bound.

He is continuing his education at Washington State University and is ecstatic!!

Sincerely,
Proud Mom-Anne Chatterton Abbott
