Did you know that one of the easiest ways to protect our vulnerable waterways is by simply washing your car on the lawn rather than the driveway?

As love bug season is in full swing, and clouds of paired insects have congregated to splat on your car’s grill and windshield, you might be reaching for the hose and bucket more often.

When we wash on the lawn, chemicals in the rinse water are filtered by the soil and plants instead of running off the pavement, into streets and gutters, potentially towards our storm ponds and natural water bodies.

ABE’s Urban Stormwater Management expert Eban Bean, Ph.D. urges us to consider not washing due to drought, but if we must- wash on the lawn!
