HAPPY TO BE HERE! YAAY
⭐ ⭐ Juneteenth 2020 ⭐ ⭐

🔷 JUNETEENTH

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas heard the Emancipation Proclamation for the first time despite being issued two and a half years earlier in Washington, D.C. This date is also celebrated as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee throughout the United States and has inspired many cherished traditions and stories over generations.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🔷 JUNETEENTH TRADITIONS

Juneteenth celebrations include rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and pageants. Soul food such as charcoal-grilled meats, greens, black-eyed peas and red-colored food such as red velvet cake, red strawberry soda, and red punch are staple items on the table. In many West African cultures, red is a symbol of strength and spirituality.

Discriminatory laws and racial violence made early public Juneteenth celebrations difficult, but formerly enslaved people pooled their money to purchase land throughout Texas, which still exists today as Emancipation Parks. Beginning with Texas, 47 states recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday today and activists have campaigned for years to make it a federal holiday. Target, Twitter and Square have made Juneteenth a company holiday.

🔷 LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING

Lift Every Voice and Sing is known as the Black National Anthem and was composed as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in Jacksonville, Florida in 1900. The song is sung during important events such as Juneteenth, Black History Month celebrations, HBCU commencements, religious services, and civil rights protests. John Legend sang this version of the song for the Morehouse School of Medicine 2020 Commencement Ceremony.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🔷 JUNETEENTH FLAG FACTS

The Juneteenth Flag was created by Ben Haith in 1997 and revised by L.J. Graf in 2000.
The red, white, and blue symbolize a declaration that enslaved people and their descendants are all Americans.
The inner star represents Juneteenth’s point of origin in Galveston, Texas.
The two bands of colors represent the horizon.
The bursting outer star represents “ a new freedom, a new people, a new star.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🔷 DIDN’T ABRAHAM LINCOLN END SLAVERY?

The Emancipation Proclamation signed by Lincoln in 1863 says:

I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons.

The Proclamation only applied to states that had seceded from the Union and it could not be enforced everywhere until the Civil War ended in 1865. Slavery wasn’t abolished until the 13th Amendment was ratified on December 6, 1865. For more historical context, watch this video about the legacy of the Emancipation Proclamation created by the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Santa Fe College Santa Fe College Community Education #EarthDay #ClimateChange
Dear Santa Fe College Student,

In order to encourage persistence and success during the COVID-19 pandemic, Santa Fe College is offering you the option of selecting S/U (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) grades instead of letter grades for eligible courses you complete during the B, C and D terms of the Spring 2020 semester. Faculty will assign letter grades as normal, according to their course grading policy, and assignment of letter grades will be the default option. However, you may choose the S/U option instead of letter grades on a course-by-course basis.

You will be able to choose the S/U grading option for D term classes from April 6-April 10 (the final week of instruction for the D term) and for B and C term classes from April 6-24. You will not be able to switch back to the traditional grading option after the deadlines, and you will not be able to appeal your decision. Courses assigned an S or U will have a transcript notation indicating these grades were awarded during the special circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grade of S will indicate that you have completed the essential requirements of a course, resulting in the award of credit for the course. Additionally, if the course satisfies a graduation requirement, general education requirement, prerequisite requirement for another course, or pre-professional requirement, that requirement is considered fulfilled. However, the grade of S will have no impact on overall GPA. Conversely, a grade of U will indicate that the course was not completed and no credit was awarded, but there will be no impact on GPA. In the vast majority of cases, grades of C or better will be equivalent to an S, and grades of D+ or worse will translate into a U.

An S/U option might be a good option if:

You are struggling with the transition to online learning
You do not need to boost your GPA to get into a major
You have a special circumstance that prevents you from performing to your typical standards
An S/U option might not be a good option if:

You feel your current course grade will raise your GPA
You are looking to boost your GPA to get into a restricted major or minor
You are repeating a course where you are looking to replace a D+ or lower, or a WD
Additional considerations:

If you have been admitted to a limited-access health sciences program, career or professional program, or baccalaureate program, please be advised that you should seek guidance from your program advisor regarding whether there is any advantage to an S/U option.
If you are considering graduate school or transferring schools, be sure to speak to your advisor about the impact of choosing the S/U grading option.
We encourage you to carefully review a list of special considerations before making your decision. Connect with your Academic Advisor to discuss your goals and proposed course of action before making your final decision. If you decide that the S/U option is advisable, you can access this option on a course-by-course basis by going to your My Schedule screen in eSantaFe and selecting any course. Again, please let your advisor know if you need additional information before making this important decision.

Go Saints!

💃 🧘‍♀️ Being playful is a biological imperative, even for adults.🎾
Many adults don’t make time for fun. This is a mistake. Beyond generating pleasure in the moment, regular play can produce long-lasting mental and physical benefits. Keep in mind that frivolity is something that came easily to you when you were a child and can again - there’s no one answer here.
Everyone has a different play profile. Options include:
• yoga and hiking
• storytelling, painting, & acting
• model trains
• board games and sports with defined rules

(This is an excerpt of this article written by Nick Wisseman; https://bigthink.com/smart-skills/play-imperative-for-adults/)
