🌍 World Refugee Day | June 20

Today, we honor the strength, resilience, and hope of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety.

Behind every statistic is a family. A child. A dream. A future worth protecting.

📊 The global reality in 2026:
• Nearly 118 million people around the world remain forcibly displaced because of conflict, persecution, and violence.
• More than 41 million people are refugees, including millions of children who have crossed international borders seeking safety.
• 39% of refugees are children, many growing up without the stability every child deserves.
• Nearly 7 in 10 refugees have lived in exile for five years or longer, waiting for the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

At the Greater Gainesville International Center, we believe that welcoming newcomers strengthens our entire community. Through education, cultural exchange, economic empowerment, and direct services, we work alongside refugees and immigrants as they build new lives with dignity and opportunity.

Until Every Person is Safe is more than a slogan—it is a reminder that safety, belonging, and hope should never depend on where someone was born.

We were grateful for the opportunity to host Mayor Kodola and his wife Vira from our Sister City Nizhyn, Ukraine. This was his first visit to Gainesville. Thank you to and our local Ukrainian community for making them feel so welcome. Great work ahead for both cities!

Please join us for our last Sunday market at before our summer break. We will have delicious food from international home chefs that you can eat there in the lovely courtyard or take to go.
All proceeds go directly to our participating refugee and immigrant families and the public is welcome!

We had an incredible time hosting six delegates from Kyrgyzstan as part of our Open World program. We visited and so many of our local businesses and attractions. Thank you to the Congressional Office for International Leadership for bringing this program to Gainesville.
