Attention Apples to Apples lovers or What Do You Meme lovers…

I did a version of this game virtually this week, and my older kids LOVED it!

If you have Zoom Pro (or another platform with a whiteboard feature), you can create post it’s with words or themes on them. Then have kids go into the stickers and over to the GIFs. I had them pick the GIF that they felt best represented the word or theme that was on the sticky note.

We did works like grumpy, sad, excited, silly, and themes like Halloween, fall, back to school. We giggled a ton, we built our emotional vocabulary, and I was able to see how they represent their emotions with GIFs.

It was a great activity!

Reasons why I don’t make a child clean up after an in person session:

1. To let the child know that my acceptance isn’t based on compliance: requiring cleaning up can cause a power struggle or may communicate that I will only accept the child if they follow my request to clean up.

2. To prioritize their emotional regulation that they achieved during session: I use many play based approaches for emotional regulation during session. Not asking them to clean up allows them to maintain that obtained emotional regulation.

3. To respect their therapeutic process and to let them know I will carry the heavy stuff. By not making them clean up, I am sending the message of “I’ve got it, you can leave it here.”

This or that: Therapist edition (part 3?)

I have a small bin in my office that has stickers and bubbles in for my kiddos to take at the end of their session. I prefer that over the small squishies!

While my current office doesn’t haven’t many lamps, I do prefer the softer lighting. I also think it helps with calming!

I personally would rather curl up in a comfortable chair than sit on a couch. So I like having both in my office!

Lastly, I prefer to teach breathing techniques over body scan mediations. While I do both, this is just my preference.

How do you feel about any of these?

Reframing the things we say to kids…

It’s hard. As adults we are frustrated and we just want them to follow our direction for one reason or another. But you can help yourself in the long run by adjusting the way you say things to kids.

This reframe helps kids to identify that they may need to move their body before sitting down for a length of time. This is a great skill for kids with ADHD in particular to learn!

A question I often get is about the timeline or why we aren’t seeing progress in kids..

It’s a hard one to answer but I am always monitoring for that extinction burst so we know that a behavior change is coming.

Do you have questions about behavior change? DM me!

4 back-to-back in person play therapy sessions hit so hard…

But this is a joke! I love my job and I love play therapy!

Bibliotherapy Sundays: What to do When You Don’t Want to be Apart by Kristen Lavallee and Silvia Schneider

This book is on Separation Anxiety and is a part of the What-To-Do Guides for kids.

This particular book is great for older kids who are experiencing Separation Anxiety. I use it similar to other activity books by reading the chapter and engaging kids in different activities or worksheets to go along with it.

Reminder, this is NOT a replacement for therapy. These books are meant to be supplemental to the therapeutic approaches and interventions used by a therapist.

Be sure to follow along to see all the ways I used different books and activities with kids in my therapy practice!

Do yourself a favor and get a weighted stuffed animal or squish mellow for your therapy office or space.

I promise it will be regularly used and loved!
