It's been a fun few days for Camp Riverside. Campers have done a lot, from whitewater rafting and water balloon fights to pizza making and trying Riverside's digital rifle range.

Over the weekend, our campers hiked the Currahee Mountain Trail and toured Camp Toccoa, a basic training camp for Army paratroopers during World War II. The 506th Infantry Regiment trained there and was portrayed in the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

Today, we continue our series of profile of Riverside's Notable Alumni. Col. William H. "Bill" Pietsch Jr. entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point at the age of 16, after obtaining a waiver from Secretary of War Henry Stimson (with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's approval), making him the youngest cadet in modern history to win an appointment.

He was personally recruited for service in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) by Bill Donovan in 1943. Pietsch was accepted by Sir William Stephenson as the third American officer to be “seconded” to the British Secret Service, SOE Executive, and was designated OSS-003. He was awarded the RMA Distinguished Service Award in 2012.

One of the most iconic moments of our Commencement ceremony comes at the very end, when members of the graduating class toss their caps into the air. This year, President Britt Daniel beautifully captured that moment in a selfie he shot from his position on the Commencement stage.

As our underclassmen were getting ready for final exams this week, they were treated to a cookout of burgers and hot dogs at the Class of 1966 Family Park. The school year comes to an end of Thursday, when final are finished and the annual Underclassmen Awards Ceremony and 8th Grade Elevation ceremonies are held. It's been a good year at Riverside, and we wish all of our students a happy summer. See you in the fall.
