Wrapping up a great week at in Munich! Our SCCAHS-affiliated team presented research projects and outreach programs at the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology conference.

During the week, the team presented on horticulture worker health, shared work on the economic impact of New World screwworm, and presented work surrounding occupational health and well-being of coastal fishing communities in the southeast U.S. and U.S. Caribbean.

This scoping review found that most back pain intervention research in physically demanding industries has focused on ergonomic approaches in agriculture, with far fewer studies in horticulture and seafood work — pointing to a need for more rigorous, multimodal intervention research across these underrepresented sectors.

August is National Childhood Agricultural Safety Awareness Month!

Here are some supervision practices that can help with everyday hazards and safety on your farm:

🔵 Create clear boundaries between active work zones and play areas, especially where equipment is moving.

🔵 Match tasks to age and ability — a job that's safe for a teenager may not be appropriate for a younger child.

🔵 Keep sightlines in mind. Equipment operators can't always see small children nearby; make sure kids know to stay visible and clear.

🔵 Talk about it regularly. A quick reminder before chores or a busy work day goes a long way.
