Position Announcement: Biological Scientist II
Introduction: The Shellfish Aquaculture Extension Program at the Nature Coast Biological Station, Institute of
Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida is seeking candidates for the position of Biological Scientist
II. This position will be located in Cedar Key, Florida.
Responsibilities: This position will be responsible for aiding in the planning, organization, and management of
applied research and extension projects involving a wide range of field and laboratory work related to molluscan
shellfish aquaculture and coastal ecology topics. Responsibilities include: 1) Collect, maintain and analyze data,
and assist in writing of technical reports. 2) Participate, in the management of research and demonstration
facilities, including an experimental nursery and shellfish aquaculture lease. 3) Maintain equipment and data
visual dashboards for water quality monitoring. 4) Aid in the writing of extension-type presentations, preparing
and presenting posters and talks for several types of audiences, and maintaining websites and social media
platforms.
Qualifications: Strong candidates should have organizational and communication skills, be self-motivated, and
enthusiastic. The candidate will be working with a broad group of individuals, including scientists and
aquaculture industry members. Candidates should be able to meet the physical requirements of maintaining
culture equipment and able to work on a boat. Driving a state vehicle will be required to travel periodically to
various research and work sites throughout the state. Must also be familiar with web design software, such as
Word Press, and social media platforms. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field
and three years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in aquaculture and/or coastal ecology fields.
Duration: This is a full-time position to be filled immediately.
Salary: Salary range from $45,600-50,000 per year is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Opening: Full-time Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Specialist

Background Information
The Turtle Hospital is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitation, education, and research of sea turtles. The Turtle Hospital is a state-certified veterinary facility and has been in operation for over 37 years.
Duties
Assist with the rehabilitation of sea turtles with direct animal care including feeding, cleaning, medical procedures and care, rescues, releases, water quality, tank cleaning, maintenance of systems and habitat and a variety of other tasks. Experienced employees will prep/assist with sea turtle surgeries as well as perform necropsies.
Requirements
Sea turtle rehabilitation and medicine experience preferred. Must be able to draw blood, prepare and understand blood chemistry, shoot radiographs, administer injections, assist in surgeries, tube feed, and all related duties on a sea turtle. MUST be detail oriented and self-motivated. You will be expected to participate in sea turtle rescues in and out of the water which can be physically demanding. You MUST be physically fit and a strong swimmer. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Experience working with water systems is beneficial. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and creative skills are necessary. A clean driving record is required.
Benefits/Costs
This is a paid full-time, approximately 40 hours per week position. Pay rate is $18.00/hour. Housing is provided on-site at the Turtle Hospital at no cost.

The Sharon Fitz-Coy Memorial Award scholarship application is live, please note this is for both SFFGS & non-SFFGS students, and both undergrad and graduate students, who are passionate about youth education and are pursuing careers in the natural science. The application deadline is Friday, October 20th, 2023 at 11:59pm. Two $1,000 scholarships (1 graduate and 1 undergraduate) will be awarded.

Job Responsibilities: The Wildlife Technician 3 will assist with Georgia DNR's sea turtle recovery activities including nest protection and management and the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network. The technician will 1) provide support for nest protection projects including nest surveys, training, predator control, and logistical support, 2) assist with the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network including collecting biological data and conducting necropsies on stranded sea turtles, 3) maintain nesting and stranding databases, and 4) assist with vehicle, equipment, and facilities maintenance and purchasing. The position requires working with minimal supervision on remote islands and requires: 1) general knowledge of the principles of wildlife biology, 2) ability to trailer and operate watercraft in a marine environment and diagnose and repair small engine problems, 3) ability to use fi****ms, 4) ability to conduct diagnostic necropsies, 5) comfort working with large wildlife species in stressful and potentially hazardous situations, 6) comfort with public engagment, including educational presentations and 7) ability to swim, complete a NOAA-approved underwater aircraft egress training course, lift and carry at least 50 pounds. The technician must carry a state-issued mobile phone and participate in an on-call rotation for marine animal strandings and other wildlife emergencies on weekends, holidays and afterhours several weekends a year.

From Kyle Olivencia: My name is Kyle Olivencia and I am a freshwater fisheries biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission here in Gainesville. We are currently looking to fill a seasonal part-time fisheries technician position ($15/hour) running from September 2023 until at least July 2024. Technician will be responsible for conducting creel surveys, fish community monitoring, sportfish monitoring, and submersed vegetation mapping. Primary responsibilities are (1) conducting a 24-week (November 2023 through May 2024) roving creel on Lochloosa and Newnans Lakes in Alachua County and (2) electrofishing on lakes and rivers in north central Florida.
