Last year, Imagine did a book drive to fill our lending library (near the front entrance) with a collection of books with underrepresented folks and themes in children’s literature. We were delighted by the outpouring of support and one of our families is now taking it a step further to include recently banned books and support a couple of small, Florida bookstores. Please read their message below:
Jeff and I (Melanie) started a fundraiser in partnership with our 2 year old's preschool (Imagine). Her favorite book right now is Hair Love and it is one of the many books that are banned in Florida that discuss children's joy and beauty. For folks that don't know Florida public school teachers are now having to remove or cover up their personal libraries in their classrooms as these are not regulated by the gov't.
We are asking that folks donate any of the banned children's books to the school to expand the school’s lending library! https://lnkd.in/eyskxs2e
To donate please venmo me (melanie-sonsteng) with the title of the book you wish to donate and the cost of the book.
We will be buying these books from the FL bookstores Cultured Books & Common Grounds books. The ages for this school are 1-5 so keep that in mind while perusing.
The two bookstores we will be purchasing from are below:
Common ground is an LGBTQ and feminist bookstore in Florida. The link to their online store is here: https://bookshop.org/shop/cgbookstlh
Cultured books is an arts and culture nonprofit in Florida to promote Black joy and joy of other cultural backgrounds to show children that their stories do not begin and end in struggle. To see their online book options click here: https://bookshop.org/shop/culturedbooks
