Food safety shapes our everyday lives in ways we might not often think consciously about. That is, until something goes wrong. For her honors undergraduate thesis project, UF Food and Resource Economics (FRE) alumni Morgan Smith combined her interests in policy, market research and food safety to figure out the impact that recall events can have on a Food Business, from shifts in consumer perception reflected in Google Trends data to measurable financial impacts.
Join us in the latest episode of the FRE Lunch podcast for a conversation with Morgan and her advisor, FRE Professor Dr. Suzanne Thornsbury, about the projects findings, as well as both the challenges and rewards of participating in research as an undergraduate student.

Last month, we had the opportunity to celebrate 100 Years of Food & Resource Economics as part of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences during our anniversary gala, accompanied by many of the alumni and friends who made it possible.
Going all the way back to the 1970s, every single generation of FRE alumni, staff and current students were there to join in the occasion. Not only that, but through their generous support of the FRE 100 Fund, they have helped us pave the way toward a bright future for the next generation of FRE ahead.
Thanks to all for making it a night to remember, and be sure to sign up for our alumni network at the link in bio for updates on future events planned for next Fall!

Starting with its title, Dr. Xumin Zhang’s Quest 2 class, "How Do We End Poverty?", puts a single challenge out on the table that invites students to envision a myriad of possible solutions.
By aligning their final Youth Ending Poverty (YEP) project with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, students end the semester equipped with a holistic understanding of poverty issues and empowered to make tangible, meaningful change—whether they’re tackling a local issue or contributing to worldwide goals.
For this class, Dr. Zhang has just earned the Outstanding Teaching of a Course award at this year’s SAEA meeting, and we’re thrilled to share what it’s like in the classroom.
