Every one of us is a musical being, ripe with possibilities for musical expression, connection and creativity. Whenever someone comes to me for music instruction for their child or for themselves, or as a music workshop participant, my intention is to facilitate the blossoming of the musician within in an inspiring and informative way that is uniquely suited to each person. As I become acquainted
with a variety of factors - personality, learning style, musical tastes - I fashion a music learning journey that is fun, meaningful and brings a sense of accomplishment and joy. I rely on a combination of teaching tools best suited to the student to craft their musical journey. For piano students my tools are: music reading, exploratory playing and listening, technical development, playing by ear, theory understanding for chord playing. For my improvisation students and "Music Outside the Box" improvisation workshops my tools are: techniques to develop “The Improvisor’s Mind”, developing deep listening, learning improvisation “starters”, facilitating inner hearing, and techniques to develop pitch matching of inner hearing and instrument. My specialties as a voice teacher are 1) vocal coaching for musical theatre roles and auditions, 2) working with young singers to foster vocal confidence and basic singing knowledge, and, 3) working with students who think they cannot sing. I can teach anyone to sing who is patient with themselves and the learning process. As a voice teacher, I work with goals established by the student, using music they wish to sing, developing healthy tone production and vocal technique.
