UF Grad Student Builds Components for Balance Research Tools at Hackerspace!
Lauren Hanchar, a biomedical engineering grad student at UF, was looking for off-campus woodworking options when she discovered Gainesville Hackerspace. She came by during our Open House and, with guidance from woodworking instructor Pete Murray, got to work cutting custom wood blocks for a cutting-edge research project.
Her projectโโIntermittent Visual Perturbations to Enhance Balance Trainingโโis part of the UF Human Neuromechanics Lab. It explores how visual disruptions (through special goggles) might improve balance while walking on a beam.
โI had a great time at Gainesville Hackerspace. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. I loved the creative and collaborative vibe.โ
Stay tuned for a look at the final blocks in action!

Happy February Hackers!
If you have an affinity for fixing or maintaining 3D printers, or just wanted to see the innards of one and didn't want to take your own apart, our friends at the UF Marston Science Library Makerspace are bringing out some of their old and broken printers, with the goal of getting a few of them back up. Come visit this Saturday on the UF Campus at Marston Library between 5pm and 9pm to take a look.
Hackers!
With the resurgence of Covid with the Delta variant, some members have expressed concern about meeting in person.
In order to still provide a meeting space for members to talk and collaborate, I will again be activating the 7pm Tuesdays Zoom meeting we had used during the Covid Lockdown. This meeting will be separate from the in-person meetings, unless someone at the 6th street location also joins the virtual meeting. Please come by, either virtually or in person and ask us questions, and show us what you've been working on.
The meeting link can still be found on the main page of the Gainesville Hackerspace website at https://www.gainesvillehackerspace.org/.
Makerspace | Startup Space | Gainesville Hackerspace The Gainesville Hackerspace is a non-profit community workshop dedicated to helping everyone from individuals to startups make, learn and build the future.
Hackers and interested parties!
It is now time! The Gainesville Hackerspace plans to reopen to the public and resume holding our Open Project Nights!
Please join us for the official reopening of The Gainesville Hackerspace on June 8th at 7pm.
It has been a wild year and we can't wait to see everyone and start collaborating in person again! We'd love to know what you've been working on! Bring your projects to share with fellow Hackers.
For those of you who submitted applications during the last year, please plan to attend so we can introduce you to the space and start our voting process.
We ask that members and visitors to the Hackerspace please consider the CDC Guidance with regard to Covid-19, which can be found here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/considerations-for-events-gatherings.html
I personally would like to thank all of the members who came out to help clean up the space. This reopening would not be possible without you.
