Founded in 2010 by Dr. Patricia Snyder, the first David Lawrence Jr. Preparing Leaders: Tomorrow’s experts in early childhood studies start here.
The Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies translates science to action through innovative research, professional development and community partnerships that support all young children from birth to age five and their families. Tucked within the aged brick of the University of Florida’s historic Norman Hall, stands the College of Education, home to one of the most respected
education hubs: the Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies. Endowed Chair, the center was established with a vision to foster collaboration among the College of Medicine, Public Health, Law and Health Professions to effect change in early childhood studies. As our reach has transcended locally and extended globally, so has our vision:
”To translate science to action through innovative research, professional development, and community partnerships that support all young children from birth to age five and their families.”
Dedicated to four core initiatives, our center strengthens the field of early childhood studies by:
Generating Knowledge: Our research is not conducted in laboratories; it takes place in authentic settings with practitioners, children and their families. We are committed to advancing real-world science that improves practice and policy in early childhood. The UF College of Education, in collaboration with our center, offers a plethora of degree programs, certificates and minors that are designed to meet the needs of traditional undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as working professionals who have a passion for working with young children and their families. Engaging Others: We connect with change-makers across the state, country and world to combine expertise and create solutions that address critical issues in early childhood studies, development and policy. Making an Impact: Through the combined efforts of our center and partners, we are revolutionizing early childhood education to meet the dynamic needs of young children everywhere. The unwavering support of Anita Zucker, UF alumna, worldwide business woman and trailblazing philanthropist, along with the fierce devotion of our faculty, staff, specialists and students, has led the way to powerful advances in early childhood studies and practices. The quality of our efforts is recognized by over $23 million in external funding since inception. The Anita Zucker Center is proud to be a leader in early childhood studies and an integral force in the standing success of the UF COE. Collectively, we are Building a Brighter Future. Herman Knopf, Ph.D., a Senior Research Scientist at the Center, recently joined business leaders, parents, policy experts and community stakeholders to seek solutions to one of our region's most pressing issues: childcare access, affordability and quality.
During the Community Conversation on Childcare, an event in partnership with the Children's Trust of Alachua County, the Early Learning Coalition of Alachua County and The Business and Leadership Institute for Early Learning, attendees explored the connection between childcare and economic growth.
Knopf shared, “quality early care and education isn’t babysitting. It’s brain architecture. It’s the biological foundation for lifelong learning, behavior and health.”
We had a great time meeting each and every one of you at the Fall UF Center for Undergraduate Research Expo! If you didn't get the chance to speak with us, feel free to visit our website for more information: https://ufearlychildhood.org

After 15 years of visionary leadership, our founding Director and Co-Director are retiring from their formal roles at UF. Their dedication helped shape the Center into a beacon of excellence in early childhood studies, guided by the 3R's of Early Learning: Relationships, Repetition, and Routines.
Their legacy lives on in the lives of children, families, and communities impacted by the Center's work. Though stepping back from leadership, they will remain connected as emeritus faculty, continuing to inspire and support our mission.
Thank you for walking this journey with us. Here's to the next chapter, and to a future where every child thrives.
