This month 25 of our residents are graduating and moving on in their careers. One of these outstanding graduates is Kellen Creech, D.O.

Dr. Creech received his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and served as one of our chief residents for the past academic year.

“Gainesville is an easy place to live during training: affordable, good quality of life, short commutes, and enough to do outside of work to keep balance. Overall, I think UF prepared me well and I would choose this program again without any hesitation.”

Please help us welcome Zeeshan Khan, Ph.D., who joined the UF Department of Anesthesiology as an assistant scientist in our Research Division.

Dr. Khan has worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the laboratory of Anatoly Martynyuk, Ph.D., professor of anesthesiology and neuroscience, for three years. He has played an integral role in major projects; the most recent project focused on the effects of the brain-gut-microbiome axis on perioperative neurocognitive disorders. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in biotechnology from Gauhati University in India.

Dr. Khan has also gained research experience in South Korea and India. At Inje University in South Korea, he was a co-investigator for a project that focused on the development of therapeutics against stroke. At the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute in India, his team sought a way to improve the diagnosis of acute typhoid.

Welcome, Dr. Khan!

A recent study published by researchers at the University of Florida reports that bilateral orthotopic lung transplantation was a life-saving treatment for patients with end stage pulmonary disease caused by COVID 19, even when those patients required prolonged extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support.

The article, “Clinical Characteristics and Postoperative Outcomes of Bilateral Lung Transplantation for COVID-19–Induced End-Stage Pulmonary Disease: A Single-Center Experience in a High Acuity Patient Population,” was published in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia. It was coauthored by Department of Anesthesiology faculty T. Everett Jones, M.D., Terrie Vasilopoulos, Ph.D., and Yong G. Peng, M.D., Ph.D., along with former department members and colleagues from the Departments of Surgery and Medicine.
