applicable to industry needs. The working scope of this program includes: 1) Selective breeding programs for local aquaculture shellfish species; 2) Cryopreservation of germplasm for aquaculture species for hatchery use and breeding programs; 3) Aquaculture of new native species to diversify the aquaculture industry, and 4) Development of new aquaculture techniques for hatchery, nursery, and grow out to enhance the shellfish industry. Our Approach:

Our mission for this research program will be achieved using the following approaches:

1) Establishment of collaboratve efforts among industry growers, research communities, and partner agencies.

2) Development of research projects/ technologies that address current key issues for the shellfish aquaculture industry.

3) Education of graduate and undergraduate students through course learning, research projects and extension activities.

4) Increase visibility of our programs via social media, web presence, and outreach programs for effective communication and understanding within the community.

5) Disseminate outreach and extension activities and research results and findings to general public through publications, social media, outreach events and coordination with IFAS and Florida Sea Grant extension team. Five-Year Goals:

Our goals over the next five years are to:

1) Establish a research laboratory and develop research projects for molluscan shellfish aquaculture and restoration to address and industry needs and scientific research advances.

2) Develop an extension program for effective communication and understanding among general public, industry, researcher, and partner agencies, and for dissemination and demonstration of research results and findings.

3) Develop a strong education program for graduate and undergraduate students through research projects and extension activities. The University of Florida intends to educate, inform, and provide updated information on UF IFAS Molluscan Shellfish Aquaculture and Restoration activities and to support and promote UF IFAS Molluscan Shellfish Aquaculture and Restoration objectives for these activities through its social media site.
