Shoutout to First Coast No More Homeless Pets for hosting 20 of our amazing students this past Sunday for Sunday Spay Day! 🐾❤️ Our students gained valuable, hands-on experience providing essential spay and neuter care to cats and dogs. We’re so proud of their dedication and grateful for this incredible learning opportunity!

🥜🐾🤎 Happy Retirement, Peanut! This kind, lovely golden retriever provided 15 donations during her time as a blood donor at the UF Small Animal Blood Bank ❤🩸 Some of the lives she helped save include a retriever mix with parvoviral enteritis, a bloodhound with ehrlichiosis, a chocolate Labrador with a bleeding jejunal mass, along with MANY others!

Peanut can be fearful of surfaces that move underneath her, such as our lift table where blood donors lie down to provide their donation. To help ease her worries, we transitioned to lifting her on and off the table instead of using its hydraulics to lift/lower, which made all the difference in keeping her feeling secure 🤗

Peanut’s housemate, Truffles, was recently hospitalized in our ICU due to complications after a bleeding liver mass removal. Truffles required multiple blood products to stabilize her, and one of the many benefits for our blood donors is that they are entitled to receive one unit of blood for every unit donated; this meant Peanut’s benefits covered a portion of her sister’s bill, easing some financial burden for their mom. We’re thrilled to report that Truffles is doing very well at home!

In humans and dogs, naturally occurring bone and brain tumors are strikingly similar and all too often a brutal diagnosis. At the University of Florida, MBI researcher Dr. Elias Sayour and veterinary oncologist Dr. Rowan Milner are working with canine patients to develop treatments that may one day heal humans.

“Rowan will call me and say, ‘Look, this dog’s got an issue, and we’ve got to figure this out.’ Being co-located allows this type of work to move forward in a way that would be very hard at other centers,” Sayour said.

🔊🐾🐽 Smushy Snout Squad: Understanding and Caring for Brachycephalic Dog Breeds

When it comes to cute canines with squishy noses and flat faces – or brachycephalic breeds of dogs – there’s more than meets the eye. These breeds: pugs, bulldogs, Boston terriers, shih tzus and boxers, for example, can face unique health challenges and care requirements due to their short snouts, compressed skulls and flat faces. According to the American Kennel Club, the French bulldog is the No. 1 most popular breed in the United States three years running. On this archived episode of Animal Airwaves Live, Clinical Associate Professor Kathleen Ham, DVM, MS, DACVS (SA), covers brachycephalic dog breeds, breathing syndromes and other health challenges they face. Dr. Ham also discusses responsible care for brachycephalic breeds, like regulating body temperature, weight management and more.
