🚛 RESIDENTIAL CURBSIDE COLLECTION CHANGES BEGIN OCT. 1

Alachua County residents living in the unincorporated area will see changes to their residential curbside collection service beginning Oct. 1, 2026, under a new agreement with GFL Solid Waste Southeast.

The changes will rebalance collection routes to improve service and include updates to collection days and limits for yard trash, bulky items and large appliances.

🌿 YARD TRASH
Up to 2 cubic yards per week — about 10 reusable containers or biodegradable paper bags.

🛋️ BULKY ITEMS
Up to 2 cubic yards per week. Bulky items include large household items that don't fit in a standard garbage cart, as well as interior construction materials from DIY projects.

🧊 LARGE APPLIANCES
Up to three white goods per household per week, including refrigerators and washing machines.

With the exception of emergency services and solid waste services, all Alachua County government offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

Residential curbside collection of solid waste, recycling and yard trash will continue on its regular schedule and will not be affected by the holiday. The Hazardous Waste Collection Center and the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station also will be open during their regularly scheduled hours on Monday.

The five Alachua County Rural Collection Centers and the Office of Waste Collection will be closed. Both will resume normal schedules Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The holiday does not affect the Alachua County Animal Resources schedule. The office and shelter are regularly closed on Mondays.

Animal Resources Officers respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, to matters affecting public safety and animals in immediate danger. Citizens should dial 911 to report such emergencies on Sundays, holidays, and between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Alachua County Animal Resources can be reached at 352-264-6870 during regular hours (Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding holidays).

Household batteries do not belong in your standard trash bin! Old cell phones, laptops, and loose lithium-ion batteries pose a massive fire hazard when crushed inside our garbage truck compactors. Protect our drivers and your neighborhood by taking these items to a designated local electronic recycling drop-off.

That clear clamshell container from your salad, bakery treats, or takeout order may look recyclable, but it’s not the same as a plastic water bottle. Unlike bottles, these containers contain additives that prevent them from being recycled into new products. Every clamshell placed in the recycling cart has to be removed during sorting, adding unnecessary costs before ending up in the landfill. Knowing the difference helps protect our recycling system—and makes Recycling Right really count.

Not only does KACB provide plants, supplies, materials and volunteer support to help community gardens in Alachua county get started but we also assist with the signage that helps keep them organized and thriving for years to come.

We were delighted to partner with the Town of Micanopy and a local sign shop to provide signage that will support the garden's ongoing success.

Day 30: Sharing with others.

When it comes to Plastic Free July, sharing really is caring.

That could look like:

📢 Starting conversations with friends, family, or colleagues on a surprising learning from the month
📢 Getting people together to watch a documentary on the topic (complete with plastic free popcorn for the viewing party)
📢 Hosting a swap night, where everyone brings along reusables they’re happy to trade or give away
📢 Sharing items on a ‘Buy Nothing’ group, which can often be found on social media sites like Facebook, or local community centres
📢 Joining a local toy library or party kit network, so reusables are always readily available to borrow

We’d love to hear what you’ve learned this month – but don’t just let us know. Tag your friends, family members, schoolmates, and colleagues in the comments. It’s a great way to keep the challenge going beyond July, and amplify those fantastic learnings throughout the community.

Day 29: Choosing to dine in.

Dining in doesn’t have to take a lot of time, but it significantly cuts down on the use of disposable cups, containers, cutlery, and packaging. Plus, many of our participants tell us that taking the time to just stop and enjoy their food or drink sitting down, rather than on the go, makes the experience all the more enjoyable and enriching.
