What if the hotel was actually the destination? 🏨

For many travelers, where they stay is becoming just as important as where they go.

Florida’s historic grand hotels offer a good example. Properties like The Breakers, The Don CeSar and The Biltmore bring together architecture, history, hospitality and a strong sense of place, giving travelers the opportunity to experience a destination without filling every hour of their itinerary.

In a recent article, Dr. Rachel J.C. Fu, our UF THEM department chair, looks at these iconic Florida hotels through the lens of Labor Day travel and explores a bigger change happening across hospitality: Travelers increasingly want more than a place to stay. 80 years of HHP means 80 years of preparing people to understand how we live, gather, travel and experience the world around us.🌎

For the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management, that legacy shows up in the places people visit, the events they remember, the destinations that bring communities together and the professionals who help shape those experiences.

The drive from Disneyland to UCLA is about 40 miles. For Jason Duplissea, getting from one to the other took a slightly different route. 🐊✨

After years of working in hospitality and training employees at Disney, Jason earned his online master’s degree in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management from UF THEM. Now, he’s preparing to bring that experience into a classroom of his own at UCLA!

When the pandemic closed Disneyland Resort’s hotels for 14 months, Jason used the unexpected pause to focus on his thesis, while the flexibility of UF THEM's online program allowed him to continue his degree from the West Coast.

World Cup visitors may be coming for the game, but as international visitors arrive in the States, many are actually going viral for the everyday American experiences they are noticing along the way. 🏟️

It's the giant grocery stores, free ice water, refillable drinks and friendly service that are exciting these fans! Things that feel ordinary to us, but seem to be play a big part in how tourists experience the US.

As Dr. Rachel J.C. Fu, chair of Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management, told ABC News, “Travel researchers have long found that tourists do not simply consume landmarks; they consume daily life.”

That is what makes tourism, hospitality and event management so interesting! A destination is not only remembered through stadiums, skylines or major attractions. It is also remembered through the little moments that make visitors feel welcomed, surprised or connected.
