UF Jean Monnet Center of Excellence Public Forum: The Origins of Support for Populism in Europe and the US
(Co-Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union)

Moderated by: Hannah Alarian, University of Florida

In both Europe and the USA citizens have shown increasing levels of support for populist candidates, parties, and ideas. Though not inherently incompatible with democracy, populism, and the success of populist leaders, poses significant challenges to democratic governance on both sides of the Atlantic. To effectively work towards addressing these challenges, it is necessary to understand why support for populism has been increasing and the extent to which the causes of this support are similar in different contexts. The speakers in this forum will specifically discuss some of the underlying causes of increasing support for populist leaders and parties in the US and Europe with the goal of placing these trends within context to allow for a better understanding.

Although officially I am Director of the Center for European Studies at the University of Florida through December 31st, as next week UF is closed I consider today my last day and I am passing the CES Director baton (and the Director's office) to Lenka Bustikova.
I will be back in Anderson Hall (Political Science) beginning January 2nd (though my appointment will be split between CES and Polisci). Still directing the UF JMCE and beginning an exciting new JM Chair on accountability in the EU. Looking forward to all the changes in 2024. Happy New Year everyone.

Today marks one year since Parliament President Roberta Metsola visited Kyiv to express the EU's support.

The EU and the Parliament have never stopped supporting Ukraine. Check out what the EU has done in recent months to back the country: http://epfacebook.eu/qBGP

Happy to welcome the first woman Chair of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia & Herzegovina Borjana Kriลกto to the European Parliament.

EU Candidate status was an important and timely decision. Now it's time to deliver on reforms.

Sanctions against Russia and Belarus must be fully implemented.

A year ago, I travelled to Kyiv to take the message of Europe directly to President Zelenskyy and the brave people of Ukraine.

I promised him the European Parliament and the European Union would stand with his people for as long as it takes. We have never left their side.
