Teaching Philosophy
I strive to give my students a complete musical education. Exercises and technique work are introduced from the beginning. Knowledge of music theory is critical to have a complete understanding of music and will be integrated into all lessons. Students will also regularly receive aural (ear) training and work on basic composition skills. Students will practice playing duets wit
h the instructor as soon as they learn their first piece. This forces them to work a piece to a more polished level with an accurate rhythm. Beginning students will learn many traditional favorites and simplified versions of the classics. I will include information on the composers and music history as these pieces are introduced. As the student advances he/she will be exposed to music from all the great composers including jazz and ragtime. I will also incorporate contemporary/ popular music and/or Disney favorites if these are of interest. Piano Parties
We have quarterly piano parties. These are game centered classes for all ages and skill levels to enjoy together. Each party has a theme of a classical masterwork. Students learn to recognize the piece and learn about the composer. We play games designed to improve skills in rhythm, music reading, and listening. We work on some duet and accompaniment skills and end each party with a group performance. Lesson Partner
For the youngest musicians, lessons may be more fun with a friend. The curriculum for the preschool beginner includes lots of games and play-alongs. Two students of the same age can schedule semi-private lessons to save on costs and increase the fun factor. Generally, the students will benefit from moving to private lessons after one year. The base rate for weekly 35 minute private lessons is $125/month. (Semi-private lessons are $70/student/month). In addition to your lesson time, tuition includes lesson preparation, printed materials, and piano parties. A $10 discount is offered to those available for morning lessons (during the school year) and siblings.
