☀️ Summer Downtime ☀️

We often talk about how young children are held by the natural rhythms of life. As summer arrives, this season isn't just about expansion and adventure — it's also about rest.

Summer is the growing season. Longer days invite us out for family gatherings, travel, and outdoor play. But even the fullest summer day has its own quiet rhythm — every outward burst of energy is balanced by a return inward, like a wave that always finds its trough after the crest.

Many warm-climate cultures have long observed a midday rest as part of daily life. Modern life pushes us from one activity to the next, but nature reminds us there's a time for action and a time for restoration. As we soak up summer's freedom, it helps to anchor our adventures with real rest — truly unoccupied time, not just a different kind of stimulation.

Screen time might look quiet from the outside, but a child's attention stays directed outward, leaving little room for reflection — or for the form it often takes in childhood: boredom. Dr. Peter Gray notes how much more structured children's time has become compared to past generations. Children have always needed periods of being left to their own resources. Not neglected. Just unscheduled.
Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting, reminds us that children digest the busyness of the world through play. With enough room for play and downtime, many behavioral struggles start to soften on their own.
Downtime looks different for a child than for us. A stray pen cap becomes a living creature, a picture book becomes a stage for their own story. In early childhood, drawing is less about the finished product and more about expressing an inner experience.
Playing on their own is real inner work for children — processing and making meaning of their world. That inward journey balances the outward adventure of the day.
May your summer be full of exploration and joy. And may it also leave room for one of life's quiet, great adventures: the chance to be still, to be bored, to imagine, and to discover what rises up from within. 🌿
