Breadfruit is a wonder: The basketball-size, lime-green, knobbled, dinosaur-egg-like crop can be steamed, roasted, fried, dehydrated, or turned into a sweet custard. It is more calorie- and calcium-dense than a potato, to which its starchy flesh is often compared. A single tree can produce more than 400 pounds of fruit a year with little to no human intervention.

Zoë Schlanger wrote in 2024 about eating tostones made from the fruit in Puerto Rico, where the tree is “everywhere.” If climate change continues to increase temperatures, breadfruit could expand to more of the United States. Read the full article: https://theatln.tc/da3tBxGd
