FAMILY RADIO BIGOTRY (Please Distribute)
God has gifted and called many to spread the good news of the gospel in song. Sacred music artists have utilized various forms of technology to share their faith through distribution of compact disc recordings, social media, and the media of television and radio. Christian radio has not been very inviting to minority sacred music artists. Given that the media of radio is one of the broadest channels of communication, minority artists have appealed to white-owned stations for opportunities to communicate their messages of song to the world, but some stations have ignored their pleas for what I believe is no other reason than the color of their skin or ethnic heritage. This kind of treatment by those who profess Christianity is both hypocritical and appalling.
Family Radio is one such sacred music station with music programming aired exclusively by "white or non-minority sacred music artists." This radio ministry, organized in Oakland, California, was relocated to Franklin, Tennessee following the unrealized "end of world" prediction of May 21, 2011, made by its late founding president, Harold Camping. Music programming at Family Radio has devolved to the absence of contrasting favorite sacred choral works and the inclusion of frequent repetitive airings of a select group of songs lacking the kind of diversity listeners have long-pleaded the station to include. One of the station’s own corporate officers, who was fired for questioning suspicious financial activity, referred to music programming as “amazingly repetitive.” It is more important for the station to repeatedly broadcast the music of various obscure white artists than to share some of that “repetitive” air time with some of the most renowned and gifted minority sacred music artists.
The station promulgates a "separatist culture" of music programming while proudly asserting that "Family Radio reaches a more diverse audience than that of any Christian radio station." This assertion by Family Radio in my view is an assault on every minority Family Radio listener. I am inclined to believe it is more important for station executives to promote a "racist ideology" in music programming than to obey the Word of God that teaches love for and unity amongst all as taught in 1 Corinthians 13.
I have exchanged numerous emails on this matter with station president, Tom Evans. Tom informed me in a written exchange that the operations of the station are governed by Scriptures. I responded by asking "to which Scriptures are you referring as it pertains to exclusion?" He did not respond. Tom informed me in a separate communication that he loves the music of Wintley Phipps, a gifted and renowned African-American sacred music artist. I responded by asking Tom to tell me when the music of this great solo artist was last aired on Family Radio. Tom did not respond. Tom and another staff person advised that the music is chosen by an Advisory Board of over 300 members. I asked if the files at Family Radio contain Advisory Board metrics justifying exclusion of music by minority artists. Again, there was no response.
As children we learned that “Jesus loves all the children of the world be they red, yellow, black, or white.” We are ALL precious in the sight of God and equally loved and gifted. Supporters of Family Radio who share my disdain for the station's continued refusal to embrace diversity in music programming may wish to contemplate sending the station a message by delaying or withdrawing support until staffers at the station are convicted of their disobedience to Scripture and begin to conform to the principles of God's Word in its entirety. Like-minded individuals may also wish to post a message on the website of Family Radio.
