Graduates that continue to make us proud:
Emerging Artist Award fur Mika!
We are pleased to present Mika Walters, our second Emerging Artist Laureate! Her piece is Throw Party.
Mika Walters is an interdisciplinary Japanese American artist who primarily works with painting and ceramics, though she enjoys experimenting with a variety of mediums. After relocating to Royal Oak in 2024, she now works in the Ceramics Studio at Oakland Community College. At the studio, she sees ‘community’ every single day, through students collaborating with and helping each other through their artistic practice. Throw Party is an oil on canvas piece that shows the unique community that the studio has brought for so many people.
The Commission for the Arts would like to thank the Royal Oak Civic Foundation for their support of the Emerging Artist Laureate Program. This program works to highlight the art of two artists in our community. Congratulations to both Mika and Sam on being selected as our Emerging Artist Laureates for the year.

Shout out for Galilea Amavizca !!! Gali was part of our last graduating class, and is therefore just starting her postgraduate adventures!!! She's been selling art at local markets, and is now putting her language skills to work in a call center-- bilingual skills are a work of art! :)

It's been a crazy semester adjusting since the closure of Limestone, but I'm very glad to say that (as many of you know) Carolyn Ford and I are still constantly collaborating :). While on her fall break, Professor Ford visited Wofford College and did a demonstration on ceramic molds and ceramic techniques for my ARTH 380 Northern Renaissance Art class (we're talking about dispersal of stylistic conventions in both 2D and 3D works of art). After her demo, we applied her techniques to a different kind of mold (for timing purposes!), chocolate molds! We all left with a greater appreciation for the process of making and decorating ceramics, especially during the Renaissance when they did not have all of the tools we have today :) Thanks, Professor Ford!!! :)

We have an in house design agency to give students real world client experience called TCA and they asked me to come and teach storyboarding and video editing to the creative teams!”

Hey all :)
After we lost Limestone, Ford and I promised to keep this page open so we could keep in touch and continue to celebrate personal and professional milestones. This week we are awaiting the arrival of a new art baby! Kaitlyn Bolin is due the 18th, but we have a sneaking suspicion that Baby James will come early-- determined like his mom! For those of you in the Gaffney area that would like to help, we've started a meal train. There is an option to add to gift cards too if you're far away! No pressure at all to help, but as always, know that Ford and I are proud of you all (and miss you!!) and will always give ya the shout-out!! We're glad to be celebrating with Kaitlyn and her family during this happy time :)

Oh, and when mom gives us a green light, we'll show off James, the newest next generation art kid. :)
Meal Train for Kaitlyn, Baby James, and the Bolin Family Help support new mom Kaitlyn, baby James, and the Bolin family after they welcome their newest family member :) *If little man arrives early, I can shift the dates :) For those interested in gift cards, use Kaitlyn's email: [email protected]

The LU crew that is now the WU crew are having a great 1st week! The transfer counselor has been so good to them and they all visited her today to report in on classes. I received this pic first from the counselor, then from the kiddos. We couldn't wish for better-- happy nerd babies! :)
