“Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.” — Maria Montessori

As adults, it can be incredibly hard to watch a child struggle with something we could do for them in seconds. Our instinct is to help, to fix, to make it easier, but Montessori asks us to resist that urge long enough to see what the child is actually capable of.

When we step in too quickly, we may solve the immediate problem, but we can also interrupt the concentration, persistence, and confidence developing along the way. In a Montessori classroom, children are given the time and space to work through challenges, practice their skills, and experience the satisfaction of accomplishing something for themselves.

Last Thursday and Friday our teachers spent time working and training hard to prepare for the new school year. We did CPR and first-aid and SIDS training. We also had fun doing team building activities as well as a few other trainings and cleaning to get get ready for the new year!

Maria Montessori was born 156 years ago today, but her vision of the child still shapes everything we do.

She taught us that development comes from within. That children aren’t passive recipients of education, but the authors of their own development. Our role is to observe before we intervene, trust their capability, protect their concentration, and respect the individual pace at which each child unfolds.

More than a century later, we’re still learning to look more closely, step back more often, and trust children more deeply.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Montessori. Your vision lives on in every child we follow. 💛

Walk into an MKU classroom and you’ll notice the difference.

Our spaces are thoughtfully designed around the children who use them, creating more opportunities to participate, explore, and take ownership of their day.

Montessori children are often doing things that surprise adults: reading long words, working with four-digit numbers, exploring fractions, geography, geometry, botany, and science, preparing food, caring for their environment, and solving complex problems independently.

When we see all of this, it can be tempting to think that Montessori makes children exceptionally capable. But Montessori doesn’t create that capability. It reveals how capable children already are.

The materials, lessons, and carefully prepared environment simply give children the opportunity to show us what can happen when we stop assuming something is too difficult, too complex, or “too advanced” simply because they are young.

The capability was already there. Montessori respects it, nurtures it, and gives it somewhere to go. 🤍

Tummy time is one of an infant's first opportunities to build independence.

Each moment spent reaching, pushing, and exploring strengthens the muscles needed for rolling, crawling, sitting, and eventually walking. At the same time, infants are developing coordination, spatial awareness, confidence, and a deeper understanding of their environment.

In Montessori, even the earliest movements have purpose because movement is the foundation of learning.

On Friday we concluded our Around the World travels for the summer. We celebrated by having our own World Market. Each class picked a country they learned about and did a project to share with the parents. Children's House 1 did wood bracelets from South Africa, Children's House 2 made "Ciao" magnets from Italy, Pre-Primary made Flann from Argentina, our Toddlers 2 class fans from Japan and our Toddler 1 made rosemary infused oil from Greece.

The Puzzle Map of the World introduces geography through hands-on exploration.

Children learn the names and locations of the continents by tracing, carrying, and placing each piece with care. Along the way, they develop spatial reasoning, strengthen fine motor skills, and begin to understand their place in a world that is wonderfully diverse and deeply connected.

Montessori geography starts with the child's hands and grows into curiosity about the people and places that share our planet.

Sometimes the most meaningful learning looks surprisingly ordinary.

When children are trusted with real, purposeful work, they’re building concentration, coordination, confidence, and independence along the way. In a Montessori classroom, everyday moments become opportunities for children to discover just how capable they are.

A Montessori mobile is much more than something beautiful to watch.

Each mobile is introduced at a specific stage of development to strengthen visual tracking, concentration, depth perception, and focus. Every detail is intentionally designed to support the developing brain during the earliest months of life.

The prepared environment begins at birth.
