🎢 June is Black Music Month! 🎢

This month, we celebrate the rich legacy, cultural impact, and enduring influence of Black music on communities around the world.

Did you know Black Music Month was established through the advocacy and vision of music industry leaders who believed Black artists and their contributions deserved national recognition? In 1978, legendary songwriter and producer Kenny Gamble, alongside Dyana Williams and Ed Wright, co-founded the Black Music Association. With support from influential figures such as Berry Gordy, Stevie Wonder, and Rev. Jesse Jackson, they championed a national celebration of Black music and culture.

Their efforts culminated in the first Black Music Month Celebration hosted by President Jimmy Carter on the White House lawn on June 7, 1979, featuring performances by artists including Chuck Berry and Billy Eckstine.

From jazz, blues, gospel, and R&B to hip-hop, soul, house, and beyond, Black music has shaped culture, inspired social movements, and amplified stories of resilience, joy, creativity, and liberation.

Join us in honoring the artists, innovators, and communities who continue to influence the soundtrack of our lives.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆβœŠπŸΏ Celebrating Black LGBTQ+ Leaders This Pride Month βœŠπŸΏπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

This Pride Month, we honor the legacy, leadership, and contributions of Black LGBTQ+ individuals who have helped shape movements for justice, equity, liberation, and community. From civil rights advocacy and social justice activism to education, arts, and culture, Black LGBTQ+ leaders have long been at the forefront of creating change and expanding opportunities for future generations.

Their stories remind us that identity is not one-dimensional and that the pursuit of equity requires us to recognize and celebrate the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and lived experience.

As we celebrate Pride Month, we also recognize the resilience, brilliance, and leadership of Black LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who continue to make a difference every day.

Let us continue to build communities where everyone is seen, valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Connect with community at the CSUF Losquadro Keller LGBTQ Resource Center!
