"LAFLA Seeking Part-time Law Clerks
For over 85 years, Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) has been the frontline law firm
for low-income people in Los Angeles. LAFLA is committed to promoting access to justice,
strengthening communities, fighting poverty, and effecting systemic change through
representation, advocacy, and community education. LAFLA's more than 120 staff provide a
comprehensive range of free legal assistance to almost 100,000 people each year. LAFLA has
five offices, three courthouse-based family law/domestic violence clinics, Self-Help Legal
Access Centers located in four courthouses, and conducts community clinics and outreach in
locations throughout the greater Los Angeles area.
LAFLA’s Asian and Pacific Islander Community Outreach Project (API Project) is currently
seeking applicants with language skills in Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Khmer, and
Vietnamese for open part-time law clerk positions. LAFLA created the API Project to serve
limited English proficient (LEP) and monolingual APIs, providing access to the full range of
services LAFLA offers. LAFLA was one of the first legal services organizations in the country to
create a specialized API Project to provide linguistically and culturally appropriate assistance to
LEP clients. We have expertise in specific areas of law, including family law and immigration,
and we work closely with all of LAFLA’s substantive experts to ensure that API clients critical
legal services. We have also conducted pioneering advocacy work to ensure language access
for API communities to the courts, government benefits, and other social services.
Under the supervision of LAFLA attorneys, law clerks perform a wide range of duties, such as:
conducting client interviews over the phone and in person; performing factual investigations and
analyzing documents; developing legal research and writing skills, including drafting memos,
court pleadings, and administrative briefs as well as propounding/responding to discovery;
providing counsel and advice and brief services; attending hearings and trials, including
conducting simple hearings under the supervision of an attorney, as appropriate; working on
community education and outreach projects; staffing community-based clinics; and working with
community stakeholders and organizations.
If you are interested, please submit a resume and cover letter to Jackie Park at [email protected].
Thank you."
