What does it look like to respect the child as capable?

What if we trusted the child a little more?

Trusted their ability to adapt.
Trusted their ability to make new connections.
Trusted their ability to do hard things.

Sometimes we want to make an uncomfortable experience easier for our children because we love them. We see their disappointment, their nervousness, or their uncertainty, and our instinct is to step in.

But Montessori invites us to pause.

Our role isn't to do everything for the child.
It is to prepare the environment, observe, and step in when they truly need us.

Sometimes independence looks like tying your own shoes.
Sometimes it looks like choosing your own work.
And sometimes it looks like entering a classroom that feels unfamiliar at first… and, with time, finding your place within it.

A new classroom can offer something our children may not have chosen for themselves:
• A new environment.
• New connections.
• The opportunity to do something hard.
• The chance to discover, “I can do this.”

That doesn't mean we ignore our child's needs or never advocate for them.
It means we give them the space to discover what they are capable of before assuming the situation needs to be changed.

Maybe sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is stay close, listen, and give them a little room to find their way.

Because in most situations, they remain resilient and build stronger confidence.

Want to create this fun sensory play at home?

What you’ll need:
• Shaving cream
• Trays or access to an easy to clean flat surface
• Food coloring (optional)
• Towels

Work on fine motor skills and letter and number practice by having the children write in shaving cream with their fingers.
1. Spread out shaving cream evenly on a tray, desk or table.
2. Let the child explore the feeling of the shaving cream
3. For a fun and colorful experience, put a few drops of food coloring or glitter on top of the shaving cream and have the children mix it in. (Warning! This could stain clothes)
4. Have fun!

Montessori isn't about expecting children to have these skills already, it's about helping them develop them every day through purposeful, joyful learning. Number 5 may surprise you because it has NOTHING to do with how your child learns and EVERYTHING to do with your relationship with them.

5. Your family is highly involved with what is going on in school.

Montessori education goes beyond the traditional classroom. Celebrations like the science fair, International Culture Day, recitals, and many other after school activities require parental focus and support.

The way your child learns is important to consider if Montessori teaching is right for your family, but the way you support your child is, arguably, even more important!

If you walk into any credible Montessori classroom you will see small shelves, but why?
The reason is simple, to build independence!

Just look at how this young scholar takes responsibility of the work she was using by putting it away. If this lesson belonged on a shelf made for adults, she would have had to rely on her teacher.

Miniature practical life items are integral to building up a young child’s independence. Small shelves, desks, chairs, rugs, etc… help your child get comfortable in their surroundings because this space was made for them.

Children are born into the world knowing nothing.

As parents and teachers, we might feel as if it is our job to teach them everything. However, is this true?
While it is important to be an active participant in teaching a child, Maria Montessori knew the significance in the small moments in a child’s first years of life and how they can teach themselves!

When she says, “Young children do not have to go to school to work. Playtime for them is a time of learning by practice. Every new movement which a little child makes is tried first of all tentatively and then repeated until the first clumsiness is gradually refined to an exact movement. Every plaything he uses is a tool for his work.” She is telling us to trust in the simple act of “play” when teaching a child.

So, when you feel overwhelmed imagining all of the things you will have to teach your child, you should also trust in their innate ability and want to teach themselves.
