Welcome back to campus, Mrs. Voss, Mr. Earle, and Mr. Waits!

They were invited to attend a leadership conference in Hillsdale this fall where they did a deep dive into the full K-12 Hillsdale curriculum, pedagogical approach, and supporting resources as well as specific training in instructional coaching. This was a great opportunity for each of them to grow professionally and learn more about the many ways that the Hillsdale K-12 office supports member schools like TVCA.

We are very grateful for these opportunities as well as the ongoing partnership that the school has with Hillsdale and the K-12 Support Team. Hillsdale College K-12 Education

What is technology really doing to the way our children learn?

Join TVCA on Tuesday, October 27, as we welcome Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, neuroscientist, educator, and author of The Digital Delusion, for a conversation about technology, AI, and their impact on student learning, attention, memory, and brain development.

Dr. Horvath will join our upper school students to explore how children learn best in an increasingly digital world. This is an important conversation for parents, educators, and anyone invested in the future of education.

The upper school students are not the only ones going on field trips! Last week, third grade students enjoyed an exciting field trip to learn how the different parts of a city work together. They toured the fire station, learned about fire safety, explored an ambulance and took a ride on the stretcher, met police dogs and watched a demonstration, and met the mayor to learn about the city water system and parks! Students even got to share their ideas for future park improvements. Throughout the day, students got to see the virtue of service in action by meeting the dedicated people who serve our community every day!

We encourage you to read this article by Terry Ryan, CEO of BLUUM, on technology and America’s children. Mr. Ryan highlights important findings from Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, author of The Digital Delusion, and what the research reveals about the impact of technology on today’s students and their learning.

Join us on October 27 at 1:00 p.m. at TVCA’s upper campus to hear Dr. Horvath speak about these important issues and what they mean for the future of education. Dr. Horvath will also present at the Idaho State Capitol later that day.

This is an important conversation for parents, educators, and anyone invested in the education of the next generation. Mark your calendar and make plans to attend!

The United States spent $30 billion on K-12 education technology in 2024. According to Education Week, that amount is projected to nearly double by 2033.

Yellowstone Day 4

It was an early and chilly morning for students and chaperones as they departed Buffalo Valley Ranch and headed into the Tetons. The group’s first stop was Jackson Lake Lodge, where students enjoyed breakfast, took in the scenery, and had a beautiful view of the Teton Mountains.

From there, students traveled to Jenny Lake and hiked down to the water’s edge. Mrs. Geary helped students understand the geological formations around them and explained what makes the Teton region so unique. Seeing the landscape up close gave students a chance to connect what they have learned in the classroom with the geology right in front of them.

The group then continued to the Teton Visitor Center, where students watched a video about the area and learned more about the history, geology, wildlife, and natural features of Grand Teton National Park.

The final stop of the day before heading home was Jackson, Wyoming. Students enjoyed lunch, explored the town, and had a little time for shopping before beginning the journey back to Idaho.

The group stopped in Chubbuck for one final dinner together at Olive Garden, where they also had the chance to celebrate a birthday before making the final trek to Payette. Students arrived back on campus around 10 p.m., tired but full of memories from an incredible four days.

All told, students and chaperones traveled approximately 1,500 miles in four days! From Yellowstone’s geothermal wonders to the mountains and lakes of the Tetons, it was a week filled with learning, adventure, and plenty of time together. What a trip!

Yellowstone Day Three: Geysers, Hot Springs, and a Night Under the Stars!

Day three started with a quick breakfast and then we were off to West Thumb, where students hiked along the shore of Yellowstone Lake and learned about the incredible geology beneath their feet. Mrs. Huber explained how this area was formed by a volcanic eruption about 174,000 years ago, creating a smaller caldera within the much larger Yellowstone Caldera.

Next stop: Grand Prismatic Spring! Students hiked to the overlook for a spectacular view while Mr. Collins explained the geothermal activity that makes Yellowstone such a unique place. Grand Prismatic is Yellowstone’s largest hot spring. Its brilliant colors come from heat-loving microorganisms called thermophiles, which thrive in the extreme conditions around the spring.

Then it was on to Old Faithful, where we grabbed lunch and arrived just in time for an eruption. Old Faithful can send thousands of gallons of boiling water more than 100 feet into the air, and its eruptions typically last between 1½ and 5 minutes. A park ranger spent time with the students sharing the story of the area and some fascinating facts about the famous geyser.

Students then had some free time to explore the visitor center, wander through the historic Old Faithful Inn, and do a little shopping before we headed to our final destination: Buffalo Valley Ranch with an amazing view of the Teton Mountains.

There, students checked into their covered-wagon accommodations and enjoyed dinner at the ranch restaurant. And just when everyone thought the day was winding down, Mrs. Geary gathered the group for one more adventure: stargazing! Students learned about constellations and looked up at a sky far removed from the lights of home.

It was a full day of volcanoes, hot springs, geysers, history, and stars. Not a bad way to spend a Wednesday in Yellowstone!

Day 1: Students started their day on campus as usual. During lunch, Mrs. Geary gave a Yellowstone video presentation to help students prepare for the adventure ahead. Then everyone loaded into the vans and headed north. After a dinner stop in Pocatello, students settled into the hotel in West Yellowstone. It was a long day of driving, and everyone was more than ready for a good night’s sleep!

Day 2: Everyone woke refreshed and ready to explore Yellowstone. Our first stop was Roosevelt Arch, where Mr. Earle and the students discussed President Theodore Roosevelt’s famous speech, The Strenuous Life, and considered how its message still applies today. From there, we headed to Mammoth Hot Springs and the Narrow Gauge Terrace, where students had time to explore, eat lunch, and do a little shopping.

The final stop of the day was the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Students walked out to Artist Point before hiking to Point Sublime for another spectacular view. After dinner, everyone settled in for the evening, ready for another day of exploring Yellowstone!
