We’re excited to finally share this groundbreaking study aimed at establishing a mathematically and physicochemically sound definition of material cohesion for viscoelastic mixtures based on conventional rheometric testing. This project became a reality only due to the collaboration between .foundation ( and )and the UCF departments of Materials Science, led by Dr. Kausik Mukhopadhyay and his PhD student Pritha Sarkar (who worked hard to collect the rheometric data for analysis), as well as Dr. Thomas Kean and Alina Lee, MS-I, at the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, in affiliation with the UCF College of medicine, thanks to the efforts by Dr. Lane Coffee, Dr. Edward Ross, and Dr. Griffith Parks to bridge the different departments to accommodate these joint research efforts. Finally, the brilliant mind of Cavan Cohoes, whose mathematical proofing helped strengthen the argument for this novel method of cohesion analysis. AFFAM received top honors for research in aesthetic medicine, receiving the Best Cosmetic Medicine Paper Award for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, the top plastic surgery journal in the world , and the Best Case Report - Honorable Mention Award for the journal PRS Global Open . AFFAM is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the advancement of scientific research in aesthetic medicine and the the establishment of training standards for aesthetic practitioners. Our fellows have published in top journals, with more than a dozen featured publications, and the best is yet to come. AFFAM’s PULSAR lab, dedicated to the study of arterioembolic filler injuries has several groundbreaking studies under way, enjoying collaborative efforts with the University of Central, Florida College of Medicine, Burnett School of Biomedical Engineering, and UCF Department of Material Sciences. AFFAM’s latest article, published in PRS journal (available to read on its “online first” section), describes a filler technique called ADORE (ADditive Orthodiagonal Rhytidoplasty of the Ergotrid). The ADORE technique was consists of the comprehensive intradermal infiltration of the ergotrid with a thin, elastic HA filler. The study employed digital grayscale intensity analysis (DGIA) of superimposed 3D facial photographs to objectively quantify the degree of improvement.

Allow us to introduce Carolyne Singh, PA-C, the newest fellow at AFFAM for the Fall of 2023. Carolyne kickstarted her medical career as a surgical PA in pediatric and plastic surgery at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. There, she witnessed the significant impact of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery on individuals' lives. This experience sparked her interest in blending aesthetic medicine with surgical practices, aiming for a well-rounded patient care approach that covers both surgical and nonsurgical aspects. Carolyne begins her AFFAM fellowship already serving as a PA program preceptor at Nova Southeastern University in Orlando, setting her sight on improving educational opportunities for non-physician practitioners within in aesthetic medicine. Her fellowship research project will study the training and specialization of practitioners in Medical Spas in Florida. This endeavor is expected to yield one of the most comprehensive surveys of its kind in the US, offering insights into a wide range of facilities. Through her AFFAM fellowship, Carolyne Singh aims to make enduring contributions to the field of aesthetic medicine, particularly in terms of practitioner training and patient care.

Please help us congratulate Chris Cotto, PA-C on his completion of AFFAM’s curriculum. Chris’ infectious optimism and positive personality made him a pleasure to have around. He exceded 100 supervised injectable treatments throughout his 6 month fellowship, observed surgical anatomy, and aced the certifying examination. His research project, assessing the dynamic topography of the cheek in more than 200 patients, promises to be insightful. Chris will return to his aesthetic practice armed with knowledge and technical expertise. He can be seen at his clinical practice Aesthetic District in Orlando . Chris will pass the batton (and AFFAM’s enormous and growing fellowship compendium) to our next fellow, Carolyne Singh, for the Fall 2023 program. This PRS study by the AFFAM team is the first to show the ability of TB syringes, commonly employed in Botox treatments, to capture dermal micro-cores. Micro-cores present a potential mechanism of vascular occlusion that may help explain the occurrence of ischemic injuries following treatment with non-particulate solutions like botulinum.
