Another inspiring summer at the UMCES Appalachian Laboratory has come to an end.

Our 2026 intern cohort spent the last 12 weeks immersed in hands-on research, engaging professional development experiences, and invaluable networking. They officially capped off their experience last week by delivering "lightning talks" focused on their project findings and future education and career plans.

We are deeply impressed by their commitment to quality science—and we know this is just the beginning for these rising STEM professionals!

Join us in congratulating our 2026 cohort!

In early June, we had the honor of recognizing Thelma Grogg, (Frankfort Middle School Knights) with the 2026 Appalachian Laboratory Inspiration Award for her leadership in developing various STEM programs that inspire her students to pursue and push the limits of the possible each day. Launched in 2022 as part of the Lab's 60th anniversary, the Inspiration Award celebrates those in the western Maryland tristate region who support local STEM programs and inspire the next generation of STEM professionals. Thank you to Thelma, and our past winners, for all they do to empower their students to explore, innovate, and pursue STEM careers!
