I feel the need to reach out to anyone who feels as if they have been ‘wronged’ by our local school system for attempting to step up and coordinate with the Commonwealth of Virginia and our local essential personnel that includes first responders, healthcare workers and others who help maintain the health, safety and welfare or our beloved community. I believe the main objective of creating a childcare program for these local essential workers was to help find a small solution to a HUGE problem that we as humans are trying to deal with WORLDWIDE!

Since I am not the Superintendent, nor a school employee, I was not involved with the hours and hours of conference calls that led to the decision to answer the question from local essential personnel - “PLEASE, CAN YOU HELP US?” I believe we should praise our Superintendent, Melody Sheppard for answering the call and quickly coordinating the Essential Personnel Care program!

I am the director of the Warren County School Age Care program. We normally operate in 2 Warren County schools for before and after school care with all day care programs for days schools are closed. For 26 years, WCSAC has been a Virginia state licensed daycare. Our staff follows the same regulations as all other Virginia state licensed childcare programs. Anyone may check our record - it’s quite something to be proud of! However, during this quick and unusual joint collaboration to provide a program for up to 27 children whose parents are considered ‘essential’ there was miscommunication of filing for a modification with licensing and registration to inform Child Care Aware of Virginia that “yes” we are open for business.

Yep! Mistakes were made. Friday, April 3rd, Day 2 of the EPC program, I learned of the mistakes. Upon learning, I immediately shut down the program, called parents to come pick up their children, which of course caused them to leave their essential job they needed to work. YES! ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL, the very people we all hope and pray we will NEVER NEED. I am so thankful to learn of the mistakes - a big shout out to Tana Hudson, owner of Meadowland Learning Center to help get us on the right path! Truly, it really is much appreciated. Have we ever been faced with such a horrific crisis in our lifetime? We are all in this mess together. Please God, are we all making the right decisions? I hope and pray throughout the day that we are all doing our best job possible.

WCSAC had to close March 13th. As you may remember, that was the last day of school here in Warren County. A day we never thought would happen. I lost my job, my staff lost their jobs and our parents lost their daycare for their children - a daycare that ordinarily might have been open for school closures.

March 23rd I was contacted by our school Superintendent in regards to a letter from the Virginia Department of Social Services and the Virginia Department of Education - Joint Guidance for Emergency Child Care during statewide school closure under the order of our Governor. “Can you help?” That was a huge - HUGE decision to make. My heart said “yes” but my mind said “no”. After extreme consideration of so many what-ifs and much discussion with my unemployed staff, WCSAC decided to step up and help.

Notifications were sent to local health facilities and other local essential businesses from the school board office, NOT from WCSAC. Registration for those health care facilities and police departments took place Monday, March 30th and enrollment was filled in a couple hours. There are so many essential people who need care - it’s a fact!! I’m not sure how opening a program for up to 27 children at the school has somehow all of a sudden caused our local daycare facilities to close their doors. I’m sure we all could do a better job of communicating and helping each other. But making accusations and assumptions are only hurtful to others whose intentions are ONLY GOOD! For God’s sake, can’t we all get along??

Prayers to all, stay safe, stay healthy. PEACE....
