Ethan Zuckerman, who created the first pop-up ad in the late 1990s, has apologized for his invention. He said his intentions were good but acknowledged the disruptive impact of pop-ups on the web.
Zuckerman explained that pop-ups were originally a workaround for brand concerns and were never intended to be as intrusive as they became. He also critiques the ad-based internet model as a key contributor to modern online problems.
The creator now advocates for alternative funding methods, such as micropayments and subscriptions, to replace intrusive online advertising.
