Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you manage your thoughts and gain more control over your emotional reactions and behavior.

On the other hand, mindfulness teaches you to be observant of your thoughts without trying to control them. By simply paying attention to your thoughts, you can catch negative ones and let them go like catching a fish while fishing on a riverbank 🎣

Internal vs. External Focus: What's More Effective for Motor Skill Learning?

According to Dr. Jared Porter, overwhelming evidence from motor learning and motor control research suggests that an external focus, which means focusing on the desired result of the movement, is more effective than an internal focus, which means focusing on body movements.

While there may be some cases where the difference between internal and external focus is not clear, the scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports the use of an external focus in all situations. So, if you want to improve your motor skill learning and performance, focus externally on the desired outcome rather than internally on body movements.

Are You Falling into the Learning Paradox Trap?

It's a common misconception that performing well in practice will automatically lead to success in competition or testing situations. However, research has shown that the group that struggles in practice often performs better in the long run, while the group that excels in practice can struggle when it counts.

As coaches and learners, it's important to prioritize long-term learning over short-term success and be willing to sacrifice some practice performance for better competition performance. Don't fall into the learning paradox trap and prioritize the right kind of practice for success!

In motor learning, sometimes taking a step back can actually lead to two steps forward. That's why it's important to have an open conversation with your coach about the benefits of practicing with high contextual interference, even if it means initial dips in performance. By challenging yourself with more difficult variations, you'll see greater improvement in the long run. Don't sacrifice long-term success for short-term gains!

Did you know that the order in which you practice skills can affect your performance? That's the concept of contextual interference. By mixing up your practice and making it more random, you can actually improve your ability to transfer skills to different contexts.

"What we see is a pattern in younger individuals of deceleration, which is an indication of taking in information rather than sending it out. When people perform better, that heart rate pattern will stay in a decelerated mode longer when they're really performing well."
