I have seen this firsthand. Had a student swimming with their face in for 8 feet then they took her out of lessons for the summer (they have a pool in their backyard) and put her in a floatie all summer. She came back in the fall, upset without it and swimming with her head up and above water. Took two lessons to get her back on track! Please keep your children in lessons and out of floaties!

Year-round lessons prevent skill regression, build consistent confidence, and maintain water safety readiness all 12 months. Summer drowning peaks occur partly because children lose skills over winter. Consistent practice is more effective than intensive summer-only lessons.

Reasons to Keep Swimming Lessons Year-Round
Swimming is a lifelong skill that benefits from consistent practice, not just seasonal bursts. Continuing lessons through fall, winter, and spring helps children maintain and build on the skills, confidence, and safety habits they’ve developed.

1. Continuous Skill Progression
Long breaks can cause kids to lose confidence and need to “relearn” basics before advancing. Year-round lessons keep techniques fresh, reinforce proper form, and allow smooth progression from one level to the next
2. Stronger Water Safety Skills
Formal instruction is one of the most effective ways to reduce drowning risk. Regular practice builds instinctive abilities like safe entries, floating, breath control, kicking, and distance swimming, which remain relevant year-round
3. Increased Confidence in the Water
Consistent practice builds trust and familiarity, reducing anxiety around water. This confidence often extends to other activities and life situations
4. Improved Physical Fitness All Year
Swimming is a low-impact, full-body workout that supports cardiovascular health, coordination, and flexibility, even in colder months. It’s gentle on growing joints and can be a great alternative to outdoor sports
5. Mental and Cognitive Benefits
Swimming stimulates brain activity, promotes focus, and can improve cognitive function. The physical and mental engagement in lessons can also support academic performance
6. Social Development
Group lessons provide opportunities for early social interaction, friendship-building, and teamwork, which can start as early as toddlerhood
7. Immune System Support
Regular swimming boosts cardiovascular health, lung capacity, and circulation, helping to strengthen the immune system and reduce illness risk
8. Reduced Stress & Anxiety
For children who can’t be as active outdoors in winter, swimming offers a structured, enjoyable outlet that helps manage restlessness and emotional well-being

Bottom line:
Year-round swim lessons prevent skill regression, maintain safety readiness, and provide ongoing physical, mental, and social benefits. They’re not just about preparing for summer—they’re about building a strong, lifelong foundation in water safety and confidence.
