Soon producers will be thinking of fall fertilizer application. Of course harvest must be completed first. But why do farmers apply fertilizer in the fall? Mainly because of the fertilizer suppliers saying that's a perfect time to apply it so you can get into the fields earlier next season.
But in the last 50-60 years the carbon "sponge" that you depend on in the soil has been mined out of the soil, causing compaction, terrible water absorption, inadequate oxygen flow, and detrimental soil biological health. Now that summer is winding down, I've had a chance to visit with folks who work and play on golf course, athletic fields, and even residential lawn owners, about how we collect data throughout the season. It's quite shocking to find that a lot of people have been trained by very prestigious Universities in the agonomy industry that have not been introduced to many plant and soil testing reports. Here are just a few that we use...and why!

1. Tissue Testing vs. Sap Testing
The Autopsy vs. The Blood Test.
The Tissue Test Weakness (The Autopsy): A standard tissue test dries down the grass clipping., burns it to ash, and measures the total mineral content. The fatal flaw is that it measures everything trapped inside that leaf—including dead, locked-up minerals sitting idle in the cell structural walls that the plant can't actually use. It’s an autopsy of what happened weeks ago.
The Sap Test Strength (The Live Blood Test):
A Sap test physically squeezes the raw fluid out of the living vascular plumbing of the grass blade. It measures the dynamic, mobile nutrients actively flowing through the plant right now. It is a live blood test that reveals a nutrient deficiency or a toxic synthetic salt spike up to 21 to 30 days before it ever shows up on a tissue test, giving the superintendent a massive early-warning system to prevent disease outbreaks before they ever blemish a green!
