The photo “Tower Theatre at Night,” taken by Scott Ahles, MD, faculty member in the UCSF Fresno Department of Psychiatry since 1983, was selected as a runner-up in the 2026 UCSF Fresno Commencement Photo Contest. The photo was taken with a Canon 1ds Mark III.

The Tower Theatre opened to the public in December 1939 and remains a historic symbol of Fresno’s vibrant arts and entertainment scene.

“The reason I took the picture that particular night was the moon was rising behind me as the sun was setting in front of me; that usually makes for some interesting light” said Dr. Ahles. “You might have noticed that the streetlight is both green and red. That is because the photo is made up of two exposures.”

UCSF Fresno will celebrate approximately 100 residents and fellows completing their training with us during a commencement ceremony this month. We started a commencement photo contest in 2020 to develop a keepsake program that uniquely reflects the graduates, their professional and personal experiences at UCSF Fresno, our campus community, and the surrounding area. In keeping with the tradition, we sought photos from faculty, residents, fellows, medical students, and staff.

Although semi-retired, Dr. Ahles teaches seminars to psychiatry residents year-round and supervises psychiatry residents who do clinical rotations at the Fresno State Student Health Center. Clinical teaching and didactics (classroom) teaching are what he enjoys most.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family, photography, bicycle riding, piano, woodworking, reading, and growing cacti and succulents.

He completed an internship at USC/LA County, residency training at UC San Diego and a research fellowship at UCLA.

Photos of Dr. Ahles’ travels are on display on the third floor of the UCSF Fresno building along the hall outside of the Psychiatry Department. Ahles is second from right in the family group photo.

The photo “Super Sequoias,” taken by Jasmeet Sandhu, DO, PGY-3, Department of UCSF Fresno Internal Medicine Residency Program, was selected as a runner-up in the 2026 UCSF Fresno Commencement Photo Contest. Dr. Sandhu took the photo with an iPhone 16 Pro.

“The Central Valley is so beautiful in all the different seasons, so I wanted to highlight the majestic sequoias covered in a blanket of snow,” said Dr. Sandhu.

Giant sequoias grow along the western slope of California’s Sierra Nevadas and are known to reach ages over 3,000 years.

“What I like best about training at UCSF Fresno is the population we serve,” said Dr. Sandhu. “We have the opportunity to learn from a very diverse group of patients and pathology.”

In her spare time, she likes to craft, crochet, garden, play pickleball, and spend time with friends and family.

Dr. Sandhu went to Des Moines University for medical school and calls San Jose, California, home. After graduation, she will start a one-year fellowship in Sleep Medicine at UCSF Fresno.

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation, Dr. Sandhu! And congrats to the UCSF Fresno Class of 2026!
