The hardest part of motherhood?
You don’t get to keep any version of them.

Not the newborn who fit perfectly on your chest.
Not the baby with tiny, chubby hands reaching for you.
Not the toddler who thought you hung the moon.

You don’t get to keep the little kid who begged you to “stay just one more minute” at bedtime.

Each version of them fades…
and a new one takes its place.
Beautiful, yes, but still… different.

Motherhood is loving, letting go,
and falling in love all over again.

No one warns you how much your heart will ache
for the versions you had to leave behind.

So hold them close.
Take the picture.
Soak it all in.

Because one day…
even these moments
will be the ones you’d give anything to relive.

Society sends some pretty confusing signals. At 16, kids can drive. At 18, they can vote. At 21, they can drink. But do any of these automatically mean they’re ready for the responsibility? Not always. That’s where emotional maturity and character age come in—and your role as a parent is key in identifying when your child is truly ready.

This isn’t just about rules or age. It’s about your kid’s readiness to respond—can they handle disappointment? Think through their decisions? Stay calm under pressure? These are signs they’re stepping into a new level of maturity, and that’s what we want to celebrate.

And while there’s no perfect playbook, Dr. Kathy reminds us: this is where traditions, shared memories, and intentional conversations come in. These mark the transition with meaning—they help your child own their growth.

So how do you celebrate these rites of passage without going overboard… or under-celebrating?

Here are 3 easy ways to begin:

1) Name the Moment. Say it out loud. “Wow, today you showed a lot of maturity by choosing to walk away from that argument.” Help them see their growth.

2) Mark It with Meaning. Create a tradition around the milestone. A special dinner. A handwritten letter. A symbolic gift like a journal or Bible. Even a milkshake works when you add intentional words.

3) Talk About What’s Next. Let the milestone be a launching pad. “Now that you’ve shown this responsibility, what’s something else you’d like to try or grow in?”

"Is Roblox safe for my 7 (or 8, or 10) -year-old?" 🤷🏽‍♂️

I field this question at almost all of our parent talks.

But I think it’s the wrong question. Because:

Roblox isn't 1 game or 1 experience.

Roblox has > 40M games! 40M unique experiences!

Created by people all over the world.

Some kids have created amazing Roblox experiences. There’s even a “university” where kids can learn to code!

Roblox has s*x rooms called “condo games.”

70M people use Roblox daily. 250M monthly.

67% of users are < age 16. Roblox now prioritizes content creation to cater to the 33% who are no longer children.

Roblox is a publicly traded company.

Users spend an average of 156 minutes a day playing Roblox.

Roblox had 14.5 billion hours of use in Q1 2023. That's 1.7 million years of time in just 3 months.

When we understand what Roblox actually is, I think we can ask different, better questions. Like:

➡️ Can my elementary child handle millions of game choices?

➡️ Do I want my child in a gaming environment where 33% of the users are aged 17+?

➡️ Does my child know exactly how to handle interactions with people they don't know online? 70M is a lot of people.

➡️ If my child loves to code, am I committed to being involved enough to know if any harm occurs?

➡️ If my child sees a n**e Roblox avatar, do they know what to do?

➡️ How do I feel about a digital space so neurologically compelling that users spent 1.7M years playing it in just 3 months?

➡️ As a parent, have I played Roblox often? It’s critical to “feel” its features. They can be intense and creepy.

I'm not trying to shame anyone who allows their child to play Roblox. I know kids who play and have never had a horrible experience. But, too many parents have allowed their children to use it and have never played it themselves.

I truly want to help you make informed decisions about your amazing kids during their one, precious childhood.

My personal stance? No elementary child should use it. Junior high only if you’re involved.

Has your child played Roblox? What has been your experience? (BTW, we chew on questions like this in our PYE membership community! Join us at The Table!)

Parenting with you!

Class Schedule — COOKUP 10/06/2023

***Did you know there are local cooking classes for kids & adults? 🥗🍳🥨🧇🍕🍟🥯🍠
Kids can learn from a sweet, patient, knowledgeable instructor who loves what she does. 👩‍🍳
There are also two equally nice, knowledgeable kitchen helpers 👩‍🍳👩‍🍳that work with the kids and keep things moving along.
The types of foods the kids learn are always changing up but are always fun & good. They vary from simpler dishes like breakfast bowls to a baked pie 🥧 , Swedish meatballs, fresh pasta 🍝 , Focaccia or pastry Art.
Themed classes like food from Harry Potter or how to make their own candy.

Classes are perfect for a budding chef 🧑‍🍳 but cooking is useful even as a practical life skill for all kids to know.

They have been really great classes and I’m finding that they are actually a hidden gem 💎 that a lot of parents don’t know about.
They also have adult cooking lessons, you can check out their website below for more info.

Class Schedule — COOKUP Class Schedule These public group classes are designed to be drop-off or stay as long as you'd like for children 6+ years old, and 3-5 years old for caregivers and little chefs to cook together, creating delicious meals and life-long memories. Reach out if any classes you are interested in are full....

"💪Proprioception is our muscle and joint sense, it tells us where your body is in space. Proprioceptive input is any activity that provides deep pressure to your muscles and joints and/or provides resistance through pushing and pulling activities.

🌟Proprioceptive input is very calming and regulating, it gives a sense of control to recognize your body sensations. These activities are useful to implement throughout the day to encourage a regulated nervous system.

➡️Many of these activities are also referred to as “heavy work”.

🗣Every child will respond to these activities differently, try them out and see which ones work best for your child. Don’t forget to join in, these are great for you too!

Here they are:

1. 🌮Blanket Roll-So many variations can be made with this. Roll your child up tightly in a blanket pretend they are a taco, burrito, caterpillar, present, etc.

2. 🌉Pillow Crawls-Lay some pillows across the floor and have your child crawl across pretending you are crossing a bridge

3. 🦀Animal Walks-Pretend to be various animals (bear, crab, frog, rabbit, dog, alligator, etc.)

4. 🧺Laundry Basket Push-Push a laundry basket across the floor filled with clothes, stuffed animals, toys, or a sibling!

5. 👩🏼‍🍳Baking-Mix, roll, scoop, etc., when baking

6. 🧼Cleaning-Give your child a spray bottle with vinegar and clean the windows, surfaces, or appliances (for younger children just use water)

7. 🥖Kneading Dough-Play with play-doh, make bread, tortillas, or pizza doh

8. 🧹Mopping/Sweeping/Vacuuming-so much good heavy work here!

9. ✨Pillow Squishes-Have your child lie on the floor and give them pillow squishes on the body. Then see if they can crawl out.

10. 🦵Rolling Pin Body Rolls-Roll a rolling pin on each other's body. To make it softer you can duct tape a towel around it.

11. 🏃🏽‍♀️Pillow Crashing-Jump and crash into a pile of pillows

12. 🥨Smoothie & Crunchy/Chewy Snacks-Drink a smoothie with a straw or eat a crunchy or chewy snack."
