Spectrum News 13 crew shot at scene of homicide investigation 02/23/2023

has led the way in working with news organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area to keep our journalists safe. We started getting targeted during Occupy demonstrations. And then thieves began targeting news crew cameras.

We began holding quarterly safety summits with reporters, photographers, management and law enforcement to develop best practices. Now the media companies pay for armed guards to provide security.

Shots have been exchanged several times with thieves and guard Kevin Nish*ta was killed in November 2021 when thieves targeted a reporter he was guarding. I have been advocating for a national safety summit to share what we have learned.

Both and have developed guidelines and best practices that we encourage media companies to adopt to keep their employees safe. We don’t know if they would have changed what happened in Orlando but we should have the conversation.
