SOLUTIONS VS MEMES
Our leaders could do so much more to promote solutions.

Saving farmers and the environment is a win-win.

A Brazilian scientist spent four decades developing bacteria-based treatments that help crops get nitrogen from the air instead of depending so much on synthetic fertilizer.

The scientist is Dr. Mariangela Hungria, a microbiologist known for her work on biological nitrogen fixation. This process uses helpful soil bacteria to turn nitrogen from the atmosphere into forms plants can use to grow.

Her treatment can cost about $2, compared with around $50 for conventional fertilizer in some cases. That makes it much cheaper for farmers, especially when fertilizer prices are high.

The impact is large. Her work is credited with saving farmers about $25 billion each year and preventing roughly 230 million tons of CO2 emissions.

Her research has been used across major crops in Brazil, including soybeans, beans, corn, wheat, rice, and pasture grasses. Over her career, she helped turn microbial inoculants into practical tools that farmers can apply to seeds or soil.

Her scientific record adds strong credibility to the achievement. She has authored more than 500 papers, chapters, and scientific publications, and her research on bacteria such as rhizobia and Azospirillum brasilense helped prove that microbes could improve crop nutrition and yields.

After 40 years of work, she won the World Food Prize for helping farmers produce more food with fewer chemical inputs, lower costs, and less environmental damage.

IF SOCIAL SECURITY MATTERS TO YOU
And we believe it does…

THE GOP IS HAVING TO MANAGE A PROBLEM WITH A DWINDLING FUND THAT HAS NO BACK UP PLAN

Washington Post

TO TAX OR NOT TO TAX
TO PAY FOR SOCIAL SECURITY?

“For decades, Washington has replayed the same fight over taming the soaring national debt:

Democrats cite a need for more taxes. Republicans refuse.

And anyone who suggests cutting the biggest source of spending — benefits — gets attacked.

But a coming crisis in Social Security appears to be pushing at least a few off the GOP’s long-standing pledge never to .”

“The rare concessions on taxes come as lawmakers begin to confront a Social Security shortfall so large and so imminent that the party’s traditional demand for curtailing benefits is unlikely to suffice.”

THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND CRISIS

“In just six years, millions of Social Security recipients will absorb a 22 percent cut in benefits unless lawmakers provide an immediate infusion of nearly $500 billion.”

“The program is funded by a on wages up to a “cap” of $184,500 a year, with workers and employers each paying 6.2 percent. Workers who pay into the system can receive monthly checks as early as age 62, though the full retirement age is 67.

For years, annual tax collections exceeded the cost of benefits, allowing the program to amass a surplus known as the Social Security trust fund. As the baby boom generation retired, however, the math flipped: Social Security now pays out far more than it collects and is draining the trust fund to make up the difference.

The trust fund is projected to run dry in 2032.

At that point, Social Security would have to rely solely on incoming tax collections — meaning monthly checks would shrink by $440 on average unless Congress acts, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington think tank.

Closing the shortfall would require $459 billion in cuts or fresh revenue in 2033 alone, according to BPC — and the sum would grow larger every year.

“Twenty or thirty years ago,” when the shortfall was far in the future, “you could come up with a straight-faced solution” that solved the problem entirely by cutting future benefits, said Charles , a senior research strategist Mercatus Center at George Mason University who served from 2010 to 2015 as the Republican public trustee for .”

“Why should a middle-class nurse pay a larger share of her paycheck than a wealthy corporate lawyer?” said U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times, noting that one recent poll found that 62 percent of Republicans support lifting the cap.

“This is doubly unfair in an economy in which top earners’ wages, over time, have pulled far ahead of those of the average worker.”

The Alternative for Germany party was projected to finish first in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. But it was not clear whether it would win a majority — which would propel a far-right party into power for the first time since World War II.

UNDER TRUMP, GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT OF THE TEAMSTERS IS OVER AFTER 37 YEARS

The New York Times

“A federal judge in Manhattan released the Teamsters from decades of oversight after prosecutors and the union agreed that the influence of organized crime groups had been rooted out.

In an order Thursday evening, Judge Loretta A. Preska of U.S. District Court wrote that she was “duty bound” to accept the new agreement and that she had no intention of serving indefinitely in an oversight role for the union.

The government’s oversight of the Teamsters began with a 1989 settlement in a sprawling case brought by federal prosecutors in Manhattan, which found that organized crime groups had taken control of the union.”
