What an incredible day at Duncan Polytechnical High School! 🎉🚦🤖🎶

On August 5, FSTI had the opportunity to connect with students through an exciting, hands-on outreach event. Students put their creativity to work by using AI to create songs that spread awareness about important transportation safety topics. They also showcased their coding and problem-solving skills while exploring robotics with Codey Rocky!

The energy, teamwork, and innovation in the room were remarkable, and it was inspiring to see students think outside the box while learning how technology can help create safer communities.

A huge thank you to the Fresno Unified School District and Duncan Polytechnical High School for welcoming us! We can’t wait for the next opportunity to empower the next generation of innovators, creators, and transportation safety advocates. 💙🐾

What a way to wrap up an incredible week! 🎉🚴

Days 4 & 5 marked the exciting conclusion of our 2026 Transportation Bike Camp, where campers put their knowledge and skills into action. Watching them ride with confidence, work together, and apply what they learned was a true testament to their hard work and dedication.

Thank you to the Fresno Unified School District, our campers, instructors, and volunteers for making this year’s Bike Camp such a success. We couldn’t be prouder of everything that was accomplished throughout the week! 🚲💙

Recapping Days 1–3 of our 2026 Transportation Bike Camp! ✨🚴

Before our campers hit the road on their bikes, they spent the first three days building the skills and confidence needed for a safe and successful ride! 💪🚲

From learning the rules of the road and practicing bike safety, to gaining valuable first aid knowledge and participating in hands-on bike training, every activity helped prepare them for an exciting ride.

FSTI Student Highlight: Meet Sergio Deluich, an incoming senior majoring in Computer Science at Fresno State! Born in Lima, Peru, Sergio moved to California to immerse himself in the tech industry and the expanding AI space.

As an Undergraduate Fellow Assistant at FSTI, Sergio brings a unique perspective to transportation research, inspired by the transit challenges of his hometown. He is passionate about frontend development, UI/UX design, and AI integration. Currently, he’s working to improve the UI and data pipeline for a nationwide web platform that combines real-life transit performance with census demographic data, helping researchers and policymakers identify transit deserts and equity gaps across the US.

When he’s not coding or designing, Sergio enjoys practicing cooking and perfecting his Peruvian culinary techniques!

🚴♻️ What if old tires could pave the way to a greener future?

Led by Dr. Maryam Nazari (PI) along with Fariborz Tehrani, Mojtaba Ansari, Bhavesh Jeevanlal, Faiaz Rahman, and Roshanak Farshidpour, this research project explores how recycled tire waste can be transformed into lightweight rubberized concrete for bike lanes and pedestrian pathways. By combining tire-derived aggregate with expanded clay aggregate, the team evaluated the material's structural performance, durability, and long-term economic benefits.

Key findings include:
🚲 More flexible than traditional concrete, reducing cracking
⏳ Extends pathway service life from 1.6 to 37 years
💥 Withstands repeated bike traffic 3.6× longer
💰 Lowers life-cycle maintenance costs by up to 34%
