Antihypertensives are so commonly asked about on your nursing exams & are some of the most common drugs you'll see as a nurse! Here are some must-know facts to save:

All antihypertensives can cause orthostatic hypotension, which is a decrease in blood pressure that occurs due to a position change. Most commonly, it'll occur when a patient moves from lying down or sitting to standing up

EDUCATE: Change positions slowly & sit at the edge of

the bed for at least 30-60 seconds
prioritizing If antihypertensives are stopped suddenly, rebound hypertension can occur (the blood pressure will BOUNCE back in the opposite direction and severe hypertension

can occur. EDUCATE: NEVER stop blood pressure medications abruptly, they must be tapered

ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitors) can cause a cough (I can almost promise you you'll see this on your exams or NCLEX!) EDUCATE that a dry cough can be expected with ACE

inhibitors, but elevated potassium levels and angioedema may also occur and are concerning! These require rapid intervention

Beta-blockers are used to lower blood pressure and can also lower heart rate. These end in the suffix 6-olol". EDUCATE patients (and nurses) to assess pulse and blood pressure prior to administration. This is a rule of thumb for ALL antihypertensives!

Which medication is commonly used for angina & is a potent vasodilator? Comment Below!
