St. Francis Preparatory School

For the first time in years the St. Francis Prep baseball team is heading down south for spring training in order to prepare for the season. Fresh off a Championship season the team is hoping to defend their title by preparing in the warm weather at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. This is a trip that the players will remember years after their baseball careers come to an end. All funds raised will be used to assist the players with the cost of the trip, which include lodging, transportation, fee to use the facility, practices and games. The Annual Christmas Party for Our Friends with Special Needs is coming up on Saturday, December 16th. Prep alum, Donald M. provided us with some insight into the history of this wonderful tradition. It turns out that Sr. Joseph Agnes (pictured with Fr. James Cooney) initiated this annual tradition during the "Bishop Reilly era" and that goes back at least five decades, not merely three decades as we stated in some of our communications. It's wonderful to witness how our Terrier students/athletes, parents, faculty/staff and alumni carry on this wonderful act of kindness. Thank you, Donald and thank you to all alumni who have demonstrated their love and support over the past half century! It seems to get bigger and more joyous every year! On for Ol' St. Francis!

The year, 2023, marks the 800th anniversary of the time when Francis of Assisi wanted to celebrate Christmas in a new way and thus began the tradition of the Christmas crèche. To this day, the crèche is meant to show us how close and humble God is to us...

Pope Francis said, "It does not matter how the nativity scene is arranged: it can always be the same or it can change from year to year. What matters is that it speaks to our lives. Wherever it is, and whatever form it takes, the Christmas crèche speaks to us of the love of God, the God who became a child in order to make us know how close he is to every man, woman and child, regardless of their condition.”

St. Francis Preparatory School was the hub for several important events and activities on Friday, December 1st.: The Winter Pep Rally || Women's and Men's basketball games || The Annual Christmas Tree blessing and lighting || The Art Department and Alvernian production of "A Christmas Carol" and the Gymnasium Court Dedication and Alumni Reception in honor of two of Prep's legends: Jane Modry and Tim Leary! Thank you to all who attended and supported these events!

It was a great night at SFP last night! We held our Education Alumni Reception on Thursday, November 30th. Special thanks to our guest speaker, Francine "Fran" Wisnewski, SFP Class of 1984. (Fran is the Director of Undergraduate and Combined Degree Education Programs, School of Education and Human Services at Molloy University.) Francine provided such a wonderful reflection on her journey in the education profession and the influence that the Franciscan Mission had on her life and career!
