BASIS Independent Fremont is celebrating a remarkable student achievement: Andy Z. (12) earned a bronze medal representing the United States at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), held August 2–8 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Andy was one of just eight students selected to represent Team USA, which collectively earned two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals this year — an outstanding result for the delegation.

Now in its third year, IOAI has rapidly established itself as one of the most competitive International Science Olympiads in the world, drawing nearly 500 top student competitors from more than 100 countries to solve rigorous, real-world challenges in machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. With medals awarded across gold, silver, and bronze tiers, earning recognition at this level is a genuine testament to Andy's talent and dedication.

Congratulations, Andy, on this exceptional accomplishment in artificial intelligence!

Students in Dr. Dixit's Optics Capstone class explored prisms of different shapes this week, examining how light refracts and reflects at the interface between two different materials — using LED light sources to see the physics in real time! 🔬✨

Mr. Albert's photography students are back at it — mastering the exposure triangle by dialing in fast shutter speeds to freeze mid-air water balloon splashes in crisp, stunning detail. 🎈📸

It's quickly becoming a favorite back-to-school tradition, and this year's volunteers (victims?) brought the energy: huge thanks to Mr. Albert, Dr. Bosley (Associate Head of School), Mr. Vermouth (Director of Student Affairs), Ms. Liz (School Counselor), and Mr. Mariscal (Auxiliary Programs Manager) for good-naturedly getting soaked in the name of hands-on learning!

We are thrilled to celebrate Tia S G., a senior at BASIS Independent Fremont, who has been selected as one of only two students across the BASIS Independent Schools network to be nominated as a candidate for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill!

Tia will now have the opportunity to apply for the scholarship, with final results expected in mid-February 2027.

The Morehead-Cain is the oldest merit scholarship program in the United States and one of the nation’s most prestigious. Approximately 75 Morehead-Cain Scholars are selected each year from an exceptional pool of candidates from North Carolina and select nominating schools across the United States and around the world.

Beginning in 2025–26, BASIS Independent Schools became an affiliate nominating partner of the Morehead-Cain Foundation, with the opportunity to nominate only two students from across our network.

Tia’s selection reflects the creativity, initiative, and commitment to community impact that she has demonstrated throughout high school. We are incredibly proud of Tia for earning this nomination, and for the curiosity, initiative, and generosity she continues to bring to our community.

We wish her the very best as she moves forward in the Morehead-Cain selection process. Congratulations, Tia! 🎉

🔬🍬 Grade 5 kicked off their first experiment of the year in Dr. Luo's science class — and it's a sweet one. Students are using a bag of Skittles to practice the scientific method: forming hypotheses about which color shows up most in a pack, then running their own tests to see if the data backs them up.
It's a fun, hands-on way to introduce a skill they'll use all year long — asking a question, making a prediction, and testing it out. Great start to the year, scientists!

🌄 Sunrise, seniors, and one unforgettable morning. ☀️
Before the first bell even rings this year, our Class of 2027 kicked off senior year early with a hike into the hills — just the sunrise, the quiet, and each other. One year left, Yellow Jackets. Make it count.🐝

There aren't enough words to describe how proud we are of the Class of 2026. This group of students impressed us at every turn — with their intellect, their drive, their kindness, and their character. Watching them cross that stage, we had no doubt they were going to go out and do extraordinary things. The world doesn't know what's coming. We can't wait to watch you soar, Yellow Jackets — but we'd be lying if we said we weren't going to miss you more than you know.

Congratulations, Class of 2026. You will always have a home here. 🎓🖤💛
