Adopt a Family - Signature Program
The Adopt a Family signature program launched in December 2024 when her pilot family, the Kromkas, were diagnosed with leukemia at Children’s Nebraska in Omaha. Dad Josh, Mom Amanda, son Jace (5-years old at diagnosis, the same age as Esther), and daughter Vada have had their hands and hearts full in new and challenging ways as they have lived out the impact of their childhood cancer diagnosis. New schedules, appointments, child care needs, unpredictable hospital visits and admissions, becoming oncology specialists overnight, well…you get the idea. Even the strongest families and relationships feel the pressure from childhood cancer…which is why Esther’s Miracle’s Adopt a Family program was born - to alleviate the daily burdens and meet the long-term needs of families impacted by childhood cancer.
As a family of 11, the Desrosiers felt the impact of childhood cancer on all ages and stages of family members. From the youngest (10 months at the time of diagnosis) to the oldest (18 years old at the time of diagnosis), to having to let Esther return to Heaven, to adding the newest member, a rainbow baby 10 months after Esther laid down her sword, to a wedding without a sister, and more…the needs of a family after diagnosis change forever. The one program the Desrosiers needed (but couldn’t find) when they were in Esther’s battle was a long-term, individualized support system that could predict their needs as individual parents and siblings and as a whole family. When things started to calm down a bit, and the Desrosiers could actually answer the, “What do you need?” question, the family had “timed out” of most programs, and the Desrosiers were on their own to find their way. Even closest friends and family tended to pause or stop sending support or encouragement within a few months. Families need Long-term, Continuous, Individualized Support - so Adopt a Family was born so that families will always have an advocate and a friend by their side, no matter how long it’s been since diagnosis.
