Adopt a Family - Signature Program

The Adopt a Family signature program launched in December 2024 when her pilot family, the Kromkas, were diagnosed with leukemia at Children’s Nebraska in Omaha. Dad Josh, Mom Amanda, son Jace (5-years old at diagnosis, the same age as Esther), and daughter Vada have had their hands and hearts full in new and challenging ways as they have lived out the impact of their childhood cancer diagnosis. New schedules, appointments, child care needs, unpredictable hospital visits and admissions, becoming oncology specialists overnight, well…you get the idea. Even the strongest families and relationships feel the pressure from childhood cancer…which is why Esther’s Miracle’s Adopt a Family program was born - to alleviate the daily burdens and meet the long-term needs of families impacted by childhood cancer.

As a family of 11, the Desrosiers felt the impact of childhood cancer on all ages and stages of family members. From the youngest (10 months at the time of diagnosis) to the oldest (18 years old at the time of diagnosis), to having to let Esther return to Heaven, to adding the newest member, a rainbow baby 10 months after Esther laid down her sword, to a wedding without a sister, and more…the needs of a family after diagnosis change forever. The one program the Desrosiers needed (but couldn’t find) when they were in Esther’s battle was a long-term, individualized support system that could predict their needs as individual parents and siblings and as a whole family. When things started to calm down a bit, and the Desrosiers could actually answer the, “What do you need?” question, the family had “timed out” of most programs, and the Desrosiers were on their own to find their way. Even closest friends and family tended to pause or stop sending support or encouragement within a few months. Families need Long-term, Continuous, Individualized Support - so Adopt a Family was born so that families will always have an advocate and a friend by their side, no matter how long it’s been since diagnosis.

Goals & Visions
What else can we do to help?

The Kromkas goals this year were to sell T-shirts and sweatshirts for fundraising and to have their swing set assembled and installed (their previous swing set had been destroyed in a wind storm in 2024). They also had plans to sell their current house and purchase their forever home in 2025, but childhood cancer had other plans when Jace was diagnosed in December 2024.

Esther’s Miracle’s Adopt a Family Program is designed to help families impacted by childhood cancer with their goals as individual family members and as a whole family. Adopt a Family set up and organized their Jace’s Race Against Leukemia shirt orders from start to finish. They also organized the assembly and installation of their swing set with the partnership of Artisan Roofing and Big Ink Tees provided sweatshirts as a bonus!!

Next goals for the Kromkas are to fix/replace their leaky garage roof, remodel their bathroom, finish their basement, and have weekly housekeeping/cleaning services with Brittany Martinez. When Jace is done with his active treatment in 2027, their house will be ready to sell and they can finally purchase their forever home!

Esther’s Miracle is dedicating this Mother’s Day to the Super Momma Amanda Kromka!!! Amanda and her family (Josh, husband; Vada, daughter; and Jace, cancer fighter!) were diagnosed with leukemia in December 2024. We have been extremely honored to join them on this life-altering journey (as the pilot family in the Adopt A Family program) as they have been on the rollercoaster called “childhood cancer.” The first 12 months were the hardest, but after diagnosis, the Kromka family will never be the same as before diagnosis again…ever! Amanda and Josh will celebrate their 13th anniversary at the end of this summer, and they have been forging ahead and fighting together through thick and thin. Amanda is a super strong momma, caring for her babies, working full-time, and handling all the ups and downs with grace and a big smile! Give a shoutout to Amanda this week and cheer her on!! (And remember, Father’s Day is coming up next month for Josh, too!).

We hope your Mother’s Day was amazing, Amanda!! 🧡🎗️💕

Reflecting on 2025 and Looking into 2026
(from Miracle Moments Newsletter, Winter Edition...more to come)

2025 - what a year! (What a decade, really!) Esther’s Miracle, Inc. celebrated her 2-year incorporated birthday on October 23, along with Esther’s would-be 9th birthday (October 24, 2016).

Since the average childhood cancer family loses $4,000-$5,000 in monthly income and new medical expenses, the plan for the Adopt a Family program is to raise $5000 each month for Esther’s pilot family, the Kromkas, to use as their family requires for individual, whole family, and both short-term and long-term needs. When the Kromkas are fully adopted, then a second family will be adopted and blessed the same way!! (20% of the funds are used for behind-the-scenes expenses, and 80% of the funds are immediately available for the family!)
