π This week is World Space Week, and it's the perfect time to share some big news: this year at RSM North California III is our Year of Space!
World Space Week runs October 4 to 10 every year. It marks two moments that changed history: the launch of Sputnik 1, the first satellite, on October 4, 1957, and the Outer Space Treaty coming into force on October 10, 1967. We think that's a great week to remind our students that space is built on math.
Each of our four schools is now its own mission, named after a real NASA spacecraft that matches the school's age:
π Fremont Center: Mission Columbia (11 years)
Our two oldest schools are 11 years old, and Apollo 11 flew in 1969. Columbia was the command module that stayed in lunar orbit, circling the Moon and keeping watch while the crew landed.
π¦
Fremont Stevenson: Mission Eagle (11 years)
Eagle was the lunar module that actually touched down on the Moon.
π Fremont Mission: Mission Artemis III (3 years)
Artemis III is NASA's planned mission to put astronauts back on the Moon for the first time in over fifty years.
β¨ Milpitas: Mission Artemis II (2 years)
Before you land, you have to prove the ship works. Artemis II is the first crewed flight around the Moon and back.
Here's what's coming this year:
β Scientists from Stanford and UC Berkeley visiting our students to show how many paths math can open up, and not only computer science
π A free Stargazing Night on Friday, January 29, with the San Jose Astronomical Association. Real telescopes, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter, and the whole family is welcome
π Math Is Cool in March, with space-themed presentations and a rocket competition to see whose rocket flies highest
Our goal is simple: show kids that with math, we can conquer space. π
